Gannan
So in an effort to avoid further derailing the pics thread, and out of legitimate curiosity, I figured I'd start this poll. I currently work 3 jobs, but it's by choice. One of the 3 is a personal side business. While my wife would say I work too much, its probably in my nature. I enjoy it, and I break it up by wasting time here throughout the day and evening.

Boogyman
I have one. Only 40 hours a week. I used to work two, and when I got the job I have now a ton of OT was available, so I made much more money just working this one 70 to 80 hours a week. Now my wife's career has taken off and I only work 8 hours, 5 days a week, unless there is a huge need, in that case I am willing to come in early. Gannan
The 40 hour work week can be a major point of contention between the wife and I. My main job is hardly ever 40 hours a week. I usually hit my 40 hours sometime on Wednesday. The one thing that does tick me off is vacation time. Our CEO is big on it. So much so we are forced to use our vacation time before the end of the calendar year (hence why I will be off for the last 2 weeks of the year). He believes (and I agree) that employees are more productive when they take time off throughout the year. However, his philosophy doesn't seem to extend to the rest of the org chart. When I am on vacation I rarely get a day where someone isn't emailing me, or IMing me on Teams saying "I know you're on vacation but I really need this done ASAP". I would love someone who works for me to try and claim I couldn’t email them on vacation. I would happily show them the way to the unemployment office. We pay people well, and we expect responsiveness and availability 24/7. If they don’t like it, take a lower paying job.

I would hope you make it clear to them when you interview them, that that's the expectation. In my case I took a lower paying job specifically so I could avoid working so many hours. I'm guessing I'd probably make 3 times my current salary working for you, in which case for that kind of money I would have gladly been at my bosses disposal 24/7. When I was in NC my bosses would call or email me as late as 2am or as early as 5am. I was always available because I made ridiculous money. However all of that work and stress can have a profoundly negative impact on one's health. My blood pressure at that job was regularly around 180 over 115 (even with medication). I took a job at a non profit for about half my previous salary to spend more time with my family and deal with less stress. Life is always about trying to get a good work life balance. It is made abundantly clear that we have no patience for personal time or work/life balance. If the partners are on 24/7, we expect everyone else to be. To put it in context, my assistant is expected to be responsive 24/7, 365 to me and my wife. She is 30 and makes 6 figures to be an assistant. We pay for people’s time for sure. VanHammersly
Hard to say. I do side stuff all the time, but it's not an established business necessarily. Then, I have personal passion stuff that I have in the past made money on and I may again, but right now I'm not. You could say I work anywhere from 1 to 3 jobs. When I was much younger I just wanted to make over 100k a year. Then when I did that, I wanted a big house. Then when I did that, I really wanted a big boat. Not like a millionaires yacht per se, but one with a few bedrooms and a living room. Then when my health started to decline I kind of realized I didn't want or need that stuff. I never did get that boat, but I'm much happier now. I agree with you. It's all about setting up expectations and paying people accordingly. Boogyman
Everyone has different goals and things they want to do with their life. I have a certain level of lifestyle I want to live, and anything above that is gravy. Time is more valuable to me than money. By cutting back on working as much as I used to I have been and are able to spend a lot more time with my kids (10 and 13 years old). Retirement and kids college is basically already paid for, wife makes a lot of money and works from home, so I don't see a reason to hustle for every dollar anymore like I did when I was younger. As long as I check the price tag before purchasing a polo and such, I am able to do almost everything I want to and do not need to stress over money. Thats enough for me. And I fully respect people who make the decision to prioritize things over money. Hell, I do as well. About 2 years ago I ended up in the hospital, and it was a wakeup call to take my health more seriously. So now I block out significant time for exercising. But having money allows me to make that choice and keep my lifestyle. For me, I want money and the things it gets me. That is what makes me happy. I can’t tolerate people who think I am somehow wrong for prioritizing work and wealth, that it is something to be looked down upon.

I know the polo thing is a great running joke, but my whole life has been driven by a desire to NOT have to consider the cost of things. My parents pinched pennies, only bought things on sale, etc. My mom had a whole shoe box of organized coupons for grocery shopping - no coupon, no fruit roll ups. I decided I would never live that way. If I want it, I buy it. That makes me happy.

For some people the only driver is the accumulation of wealth itself. As if it was a game and the more money wins. My philosophy is that I want to have enough wealth to do whatever I want to do and also have enough to feel secure financially.

I am on a plane to SF right now and convinced the hotel to move a Peloton into my room. Pretty solid.

That should be everybody's goal, but most people don't get there and often its their own fault. I know I am happy with the way my life has and is turning out, I come from an extremely poor family. Single mom, 2 kids, who barely made 20 grand a year. I am not as driven as you are are career wise because my wants are different, but I pretty much have everything I want and worked to get there. We had a proposal due, and were staying late to get it done. Except for him. He went home to have dinner with his family, and came back 2 hours later, comes in and is like "hey guys how’s it going, let me know how I can help”. Im thinking, "mfer we’re gonna be done in 5 minutes. You could have helped 2 hours ago while we were quickly shoving a slice of pizza down at our desk working through dinner while you were having a nice relaxing evening with your family” Such a lack of leadership.
