The Eagles will return to the NovaCare Complex on July 27 for the start of training camp. Under new head coach Nick Sirianni, the Eagles will look to bounce back from a dreadful 4-11-1 campaign.

The Characters

 

Jake Elliott: Entering his fifth season, Elliott needs to get back to his consistent ways. He is coming off the worst campaign of his career -- 73.7% on field-goal attempts -- and is in serious need of a turnaround. He’s a high-priced specialist facing no offseason competition. - Lock

Arryn Siposs: The Eagles let Cameron Johnston walk in free agency to make way for the cheaper, inexperienced Siposs. The team was looking to save some cash, but Siposs could prove to be a risky gamble. While he isn’t competing with anyone on the roster, if Siposs struggles, he could be one-upped by the waiver wire. - On the bubble

 

Biggest Question: Will Arryn Siposs be an upgrade over Cameron Johnston?

 

Siposs is a bit of a mystery. While he was reportedly performing well in Detroit last offseason, there was no preseason, so he wasn’t been able to show off his skills in an actual game. That said, he is known for his booming leg, which should help him replace Johnston, in theory.

 

While Johnston was clearly undervalued by the Eagles, he did land a three-year deal with the Houston Texans this offseason. The Eagles are hoping that gambling on Siposs will work out in their favor.

 

Remember, not only is Siposs replacing Johnston as a punter, but he’s also replacing him as a holder as well. Siposs’ chemistry with Lovato and Elliott will be important after the duo worked with Johnston for the past three years.

 

Battle to Watch: Arryn Siposs vs. himself

 

Siposs is really the guy to watch on special teams. If he excels under new special teams coordinator Michael Clay, the Eagles will look smart for letting Johnston go. If he struggles, the Eagles will look foolish for not giving him competition during the summer.

Cam Johnston is one of the top 5 punters in the league, that's why we couldn't afford to keep him.  I guess ultimately the hope for Siposs is that we punt less.

Did the ratings back that up? I always got the feeling with Cam that the talent was there but that he couldn't find that real consistency. He had a boomer of a leg but his accuracy left a lot to be desired.
