I think defensive end might be a position they attack in FA with the options potentially available. If you look at the potential market and who could be available, I think it’s a position where they could get a good defensive end.

Yeah, but we have historically drafted line and signed/traded for CBs. I can't remember the last good CB we actually drafted. Lito and Sheldon?

Hearing he's fine and it was just dinged makes me question his toughness just a bit. Crucial drive of the game and Calcaterra is running the crossing pattern. Not good.

After seeing the Williams brothers cause havoc for the Jets defense, anyone know if Jordan Davis or Jalen Carter have brothers that play LB?

Today’s discussions about the details have been enlightening.  Good quality thinking.  But for me the biggest frustration I have with yesterday isn’t at the individual or granular level.  It is the missed opportunity to put the 49ers one game behind.  Perhaps it means more to me because of where I live, but sheet it would be nice to have put them behind us rather than tied.

listening to KNBR this morning it was interesting to hear Greg Pappa talk about Purdy’s poor performance.  It was a breath of realistic fresh air rather than smoke blowing up everyone’s skirts.

Worked with Gary Papa, Greg's brother, back in the the early 90's at Channel 6 as an intern. What a guy!!  Like Greg's work as an announcer. Sure he's not as irritating as some.

yep

and rookie CBs typically struggle. We wont get an elite Sauce, or Gonzalez picking in the mid-late 20s, or even 30-32.

Any CB we draft is unlikely to be an impact player right away. Likely for all of next year, Jobe and Ricks will both be better players than the rookie.

As you said, we draft lines, and trade for or sign CBs.

Maybe we can get Jalen's Dad to help with coaching?

No one said it isnt a need. I said DE and RT are the clear biggest needs.

I don't think it’s clear over RT. I think RT is a more important position but in terms of need slay has already started declining. And bradberry is fine as a no. 2 but also getting older. Lane if he stays healthy is still playing at a high level. The issue is Johnson goes down you are significantly worse. However, if you look at all the back ups RTs on all 32 teams in the NFL, you’re having a Grand Canyon size drop off from Johnson. I think they could use a better backup than Driscoll. Someone that stoutland views as being groomed to replace lane.  I think argument that the eagles would value RT over Cb in a situation where they were going to address it. But terms of pure need i think lane is still playing at an All pro level when healthy. I can’t say that about slay and their backups have yet to definitively prove they can be competent against better offenses. We are gonna find out though

Looking at the contracts, and assuming OTC is right, you have to think Bradberry is done after 2024. He has a $16.595 million bonus if he is on the team in 2025, and I can't imagine we pay that for 1 year. You have to cut or restructure him post 2024.

Slay also has a $16.1 million 2025 option, so guessing he is gone as well unless he extends/restructures.

could have had Joey Porter Jr. at 30/31 this year

We have our injuries. But so do others. 49ers without Mccafery are a different team. And no Deebo as well. Could gain a couple more losses coming up. Like to win 2 out of next 3 going into KC. Which I am attending. 😎 Should be a healthier team by then. Hopefully...

I sure hope so. A 35 year old CB sounds like a disaster.

Let me know what it looks like after this week if slay is out. Basing off zack Wilson and an inept jets offense is not the best way to make statements long term future about him. Before we say vs. rams, the cardinals held the rams to 6 points in the first half of their game. Then they basically imploded on offense with turnovers that led to the rams outburst.

A 2 game sample isn't much.  Maybe basing his performance on what happens against the Dolphins isn't good either. It's not like he will be playing them every week.   It looks like he's competent but he hasn't been that challenged.  He also hasn't produced any turnovers.

For the last time, I am not flying to KC to go with you to the game.

Seems like they are both set up to be our post June 1 cuts after the 2024 seasons.

When was the last time they used a first round pick on the corner? Lito Sheppard. When was the last time do use a second round pick on a corner? Sidney Jones. And they used it on a guy who is coming off an Achilles injury. So you really didn’t get a guy who is healthy. He was never the same after that Achilles. Douglas actually is good. Just wasn’t here. Went elsewhere where they utilized him better and has been solid.

before they got to Darius slay, and James Bradberry, how many free agents or trades did they make that didn’t work out at that position? they made a ton that didn’t work out in their favor. Even darby he got hurt and missed time a lot. The corner position after years finally got righted by getting slay and bradberry but had been an issue drafting and FA/trade before that

My reasoning for saying that is because it’s a tougher challenge and you’re gonna find out more about these corners when you get into this part of the schedule against better offenses. I’m not asking them to be perfect. Nobody’s gonna be perfect vs. these offenses. Though you want to see them making strides against good offenses week to week. If they don’t, then you’re going to have a better answer. Realistically, I don’t take as much from a bad jets offense. They make a lot of corners look better.

Our best CB draft pick, who played for us, is likely Avonte in the last 20 years. That's sad. Even worse, I think Jalen Mills is the 2nd best.

I don’t love what Brian Johnson has done this year particularly in the red zone. However, I also know it’s his first year being an OC and you’re asking him to replace a guy who went to the Super Bowl and called maybe his best game of the year in the Super Bowl. The odds were anybody that replaced steichen wasn’t going to be as good or good enough. they’re not gonna fire Brian Johnson after this year unless it really goes off the rails. the curious question is going to be in 2024, if the offense still has some of the same issues we’ve seen then it’s going to be an issue and likely he gets replaced.

I respect your posts and your knowledge. I see teams loose coordinators and they don't take a step back, but I guess coaches like Andy, Shanahan, and McV keep things from falling off. Nick doesn't seem like that guy since the offense improved when he stopped calling plays. I like him as a HC, though.

Maddox with a fourth round pick in a slot corner. I think it’s easier to try to find a slot corner in the middle round then it is to find an outside corner in the same round. They definitely haven’t drafted and developed corners very well. But prior to slay and bradberry, they also had been fairly poor with their free agent signings ( nnamdi, Cary Williams and maxwell) and traded (Ellis Hobbs and darby)

Andy and Sean McVay are outliers. And Sean McVay had plenty of issues last year when Matt Stafford went down. He had one baker game but really that offense as a mess granted due to injury. Even before Stafford got hurt t was very choppy. I think if you’re trying to compare it to those two guys you’re gonna be disappointed. Shanahan also like Sean McVay, when Jimmy Garoppolo got hurt (before last year) had issues with his offenses. I think Sirianni strengths are not the same as those three guys. If you’re asking him to be an offensive genius, I don’t think that’s where he is gonna thrive as a head coach. Kind of the same thing for Doug pederson.

yes. But you arent usually getting a 6'1'' lock down corner that late. And that only happened because goofballs thought Forbes and Banks were better.

Realistically picking there we should be getting someone like Banks- not as impressive.

I give saleh credit for his team plying so well on defense considering what they were down. He’s right at home against mahomes, Allen and hurts that defense has played really well. They have forced 10 turnovers in those 3 games. That said, I think the Jets are going to struggle when they go on the road. Because Zack Wilson isn’t gonna be as comfortable on the roads so you’re going to see more turnovers from him. And their defense in 2 road games has given up 26 points per game. They are much different on the road than they are at home

They were drastically different when CMC was out
