Opera has been here for a while under Stoutland tutelage. Steen could become a much different guy in a year or two. Not sure why this is a question. Opeta is an OG with years of coaching under Stoutland and knows the playbook. Steen is an OT rookie backup learning all the positions. They take their time with rookies, even 1st round picks.

They always say it's a competition, what matters are the actions and results. Even 1st round picks don't always fully start. They eased in Jordan Davis, even this year Carter didn't start until Cox was out. So it's not surprising that Steen didn't get thrown into a starting role as a rookie playing out of position vs an experienced guy with the team playing his natural position. Why does that bother you? Opeta played great.

What bothered me is you saying you aren't sure why it's a question to ask "I wonder if Steen is that far off or if they are just committed to him focusing on being a backup tackle this season." It's a very worthy question to be asking.

I quoted multiple people asking about Steen not just your specific question. It seemed people took it as a negative on Steen.

Opeta may have had a break-out game this week which may put him in competition for starting RG next season when Jurgens moves to center. Steen could be the top back-up next year at multiple positions or possibly trained at RT if we don’t draft Lane’s replacement with a high pick this year.
October 12, 20231 yr If Opeta continues to play well you keep him there. I'd say Kelce retires at the end of the season and it gives you some continuity across the line with only one position to replace and a ready made replacement

Opeta has been fine for a back up but Jurgens will be a big help.
November 1, 20231 yr Good news! The Iggles could really benefit this week by getting their run game back on track. Cam helps that, IMO.

Glad to see people pointing out that he was effective. He had a rough start against the Patriots, but he started to play much better. He's a mauler in the run game despite being undersized as a guard.

Hope you’re right, because the run game has been struggling for weeks. Not sure how much of it is Jalen’s inability to run now or Jurgens being out. Maybe a bit of both, but having him back should help for sure. Opeta had his ups and downs. It was a nightmare when Lane went down and Driscoll was paired with Opeta, but having the line back together is huge for us.
November 3, 20231 yr Just saw a report stating Steen is getting first team reps and Jurgens might not be ready to play yet. I guess Opeta got benched regardless. https://www.bleedinggreennation.com/2023/11/2/23943952/eagles-injury-report-tyler-steen-start-cam-jurgens-right-guard-tyron-smith-nfl-news-cowboys-dallas

With how poorly the secondary played last week it would help for us to try to maximize TOP to keep their offense on the sideline as much as possible ... a strong running game will help toward that.

I feel like Jurgens going down and Jalen being hurt has coincided with the Eagles run game struggling. One has to wonder how long Jalen has been hurt, because he’s been running much differently almost since that hit he took in New England when he fumbled. As the season has gone on he’s no longer a factor in the run game and if feels like team know this too. Without Jalen holding the end or the linebackers, the zone read plays are somewhat useless. Still the Eagles need to commit to trying to run the ball, because they have gotten away from even trying to do so. Can we get Penny some touches please? Seems like his downhill style would be a major help right now.

Obviously having a player with the abilities Hurts has helps any aspect of an offense, but still you should be able to put together a strong rushing attack even without that threat from the QB position with the OL we have and our stable of RBs. There are plenty of teams that have a strong rushing attack that do not have such a strong duel threat like Hurts at QB.

Perhaps it’s their overall scheme and it’s reliance on Jalen to do all and be all. He’s not going to be a factor in the run game until he heals. They need to recognize this and change it up. They also need to commit to running the football.
