Eagles trade for Titans S Kevin Byard, send Edmunds and 2024 5th & 6th round picks

Featured Replies

Not even a full week ago, it was reported Howie was looking for help in the secondary.  After signing Scott and Goodrich (underwhelming moves) and Julio Jones at WR some fans whined that it wasn't good enough.  They managed to hold the Dolphins offense to 10 points with backups and scrubs and go to 6-1.

Howie wasn't done, now he's got a solid player to put back there.  Desai has been improving a lot and now he has a solid proven veteran to work with.

Great trade.  Even if he doesn't re-sign here, they were needy at the position.

One of my coworkers is a huge Titans (formerly an Oilers) fan, but I told him there’s so many Titans on the Eagles he might as well switch teams. 😂

Drafting from the SEC and trading for players from southern teams (Titans, Saints).

I support PFF’srankings when it’s complimentary to our players

I think he is still under contract for 2024, but the cap hit would be 14 million and there is seemingly no dead money in cutting him. It's highly unlikely the Eagles can keep a 31 year old safety on that basis, so maybe that's what people meant by one year rental. They could of course try and agree another restructure.

The cap hit is very low this year.

The fact that Howie was able to pull this off is really quite impressive.  He didn't have much margin for error to work with here given the cap constraints for both this year and next year.  To get a player of that caliber without having to really pay anything in terms of money or draft comp is threading quite the needle.

Skeptical minds might remark that Byard is on the wrong side of 30 at a relatively insignificant position, and that we made a similar splash move for Robert Quinn last season that didn't materialize.  But I disliked the Quinn trade from the start because we had loads of depth there and it was obvious he was cooked.  This is much different.  Byard's not only a terrific safety, but a very versatile one that can play the slot or in the box.  Given slot corner and safety were the two most pressing needs following the Maddox injury, this is like getting a 2 for 1.  It's also at a position that tends to age fairly well.  This is probably only for this year, but I wouldn't be shocked if it worked so well he ends up staying longer.  Very similar player to a guy like Jenkins and potentially a great leader as well.

This time it might be true!

Quite the upgrade. But, another 1 year rental player??!!

Using the 2024 version of the Rich Hill model draft pick trade value chart (see 2024 Draft pick trade value chart - Rich Hill version), the total draft compensation in this trade figures to be a pretty late 4th round pick.

Final values won't be determined until we know where those draft picks will be at the end of the season, but the 5th rounder (apparently, the higher of the Vikings spot and the Bucs spot, both acquired in prior trades) figures to be upper half of the round and the 6th rounder (the return of Tennessee's own pick acquired in a prior trade) figures to be upper half of the round as well, and that figures to add up to about the 20th to 25th pick in the 4th round worth of value.

Looking forward to seeing this happen in Eagle green.

Who knows, Howie might restructure him. Let's see how the season goes.

Significant upgrade, Howie does it again.  Now the defense is pretty stacked all around other than LB

If anyone is curious, I looked up the free agent compensatory pick rules, and if the Eagles cut Byard in the offseason rather than pay his 2024 contract, it appears the Eagles would NOT be eligible for compensatory draft pick compensation the following year for losing him - only players whose contracts expire are eligible.

At LB, Nakobe Dean getting healthier and more comfortable will help, and Nolan Smith just got his first sack last night and maybe we'll see more reps from him as the season goes on.  We know LB is probably the weak spot on the team, but if the secondary gets healthy and the D line dominates, that really takes pressure off them.

Howie is like the slickest used car salesman on earth.

I'm guessing he'll be good to start Sunday?

I thought you meant the other Amy Adams...

Howie, is that you?

The competition committee gonna ban Howie from making trades next 😄

So how much of an upgrade is this? I mean he’s good but how good.

So we’re paying him 2.4m for this season and then what?  Cut or restructure ? Seems like a win win tbh

I like this trade... Big need without giving up too much... No way Howie made this trade... if he had the Titans would also be sending Henry too 🤣
