Posted December 4, 20232 yr Every game since that one ive been asking this same question. When we did that we seemed unstoppable. I just thought, why not do this every game? Instead, we never ran the ball down any teams throats again. If we followd the same game plan we might have beaten the 49ers, or at least, not get destroyed and embarrassed. What happened? Is it because of AJ? Did he throw a tantrum and demand that he be the focus of the offense?

Honestly i think howie wants to re sign Swift, and if he gets 20+ carries a game and 1000 yards hes going to cost more. So use him sparingly then when contract talks come up , use his lack of " production" to low ball him...😒

The NFC is for the most part down and this team may not get this opportunity again for a while.
December 4, 20232 yr We need a big back and we have one in Penny. Gainwell gives us nothing. I would put him in the press box and dress Penny and give him and Scott carries.
December 4, 20232 yr Because Johnson is an idiot. If he hasnt learned by now he won’t. Be prepared for another unbalanced blowout next week.
December 4, 20232 yr The Vikings game they were gashing the Vikings with holes the size of Alaska. Not so much these days. The passing game has worked. People shouldn't be mad that they aren't running. They should be mad that when they try it isn't working at all. That falls more on Stoutland and Sirianni.. the guys who design the run game and coach the blocking. But keep blaming everything on Johnson for reasons that seem pretty obvious but everyone's afraid to say out loud.

I get that the run/pass is skewed because they were down but that is '**** ridiculous.

It's hard to determine if the run game is even "working" or not when your #1 RB gets 6 carries. That's not near enough to even get a rhythm going. Completely inexcusable in any game. Then on top of that the pass plays are predictable and lack creativity. Today the 9ers get gashed by two slants to AJ Brown then we unbelievably don't do it again for the rest of the game. Our defense has kept us in a bunch of games where our offense had a terrible first half and had to play hero catch-up ball in the second half. This game was by far the defense's worst game all season, so they were not able to bail out the incompetent offense. Of course that is collectively the fault of all of the offensive coaching staff, but especially Sirianni and Johnson.
December 4, 20232 yr Sirianni is on record after those first two games as saying that both New England and Minnesota played unconventional defenses that led to more running plays, and that we shouldn't necessarily expect that moving forward. Swift is not the back that this board thinks he is. If he were, Detroit would have kept him.

The jury is very much still out on Johnson, but it's hard for me to get on him too much today when they racked up over 200 yards on their first five drives. Once you fall behind 15 points against a defense that good, you're asking for trouble.
December 4, 20232 yr Would like to see more north/south runs when the QB is under center. Everything is college shotgun
December 4, 20232 yr The answer to this question is pretty simple. Brian Johnson sucks. He has no football philosophy it seems. Just run the same 15 plays over and over again. He's the worst playcaller I've ever seen. When they ban the Brotherly Shove next season he will lose the best play he has in his playbook. And that was there before he was.
December 4, 20232 yr To me there are two plays that stand out that changed the complexion of the game. 1st Josh Sweat lined up in the neutral zone on a stopped 3rd down in which niners scored a td a few plays later, holding them to 3 would have been big. I've yet to see an angle that shows where Sweat was lined up but either way ots a ticky tack call seeing as there have been multiple times this year DL have obviously lined up in the zone against the tush push and it never gets called. Like i said ticky tack, if it was lined up in the neutral zone and its not like it was super obvioius then call it every time,be consistent just dont call it on a whim. 2nd obvious hold on blankenship on the 1st long Deebo TD. Eagles had just scored and were down by a score, refs make that obvious easy call niners lose ten yards most likely punt back to the eagles and eagles get ball back with a chance to tie. Instead niners go up 2 scores and the route was on, that play was an absolute game breaker. Another call that really bugged me but didnt have the same impact was the non PI call against Quez, i remember pre snap saying oh look quez is in, its probably going to be a slot fade because BJ is so creative( sarcasm) sure enough hurts tossed it up into double coverage as the safety clearly knew like everyone else what the play was, ball was in a good spot that gave quez a chance but the DB clearly got there early face guarded then with both his arms pushed quez in the chest before the ball got there and the refs were like🤷♂️ and the stupid announcers said the db looked back for the ball so its not PI. I was like so a DB can maul a Receiver before the ball arrives as long as he looks back??? The Refs have been awful across the league all year and the two calls i mentioned above were plays where refs changed the game.☹️
December 4, 20232 yr Brian Johnson is either incredibly inept, incredibly dumb, or a combination of both. I suspect he wasn't developed and proven enough to be an NFL OC. He got fast tracked and is now failing because of it. He wasn't anywhere near ready. the worst part is that since he needs a few years of development and improvement himself, he is in no position to develop the QB, who is also showing signs of stagnation and even regression. It's a total SH**show and they're running the risk of ruining Hurts career by making him into yet another running QB who can't beat elite defenses from the pocket, which is required to win it all. It's frustrating to watch.

The refs helped. But we have been winning in spite of our own self inflicted wounds all season. The only difference this week is we faced a team who doesn't drop passes or throw errant balls. Defense can't get off the field without a mistake by the other team. Offense looks lost weekly for long stretches of games. I agree the refs sucked. But that was not what pissed me off the most.

And that was there before he was. I wouldnt say just worst play caller id say worst play designer. Every week plenty of other offenses have guys wide open all over the field, not because of great route running but because of great olay design that schemes them open. Shannahan is one of if not the best play designer in the league. Every week he schemes guys wide open for chunk plays. All purdy has to do is stand there and hit wide open targets all game, Purdy in m opinion is a step above trash, shannahan,( and McCaffrey) make it so easy for him. Meanwhile BJ has just as much talent in offense and every week watching the O is like nails on a chalk board, every thung seems so hard and everything is so reliant on the talent being better than the guys across them. Can you imagine hurts in a shannahan offense where hurts is just casually standing back there throwing to wide open guys all game? Instead we get the same static plays from BJ and to be Fair Nick as well Zero motion, limited creativity, the same static formations route concepts and plays, its just so predictable and uncreative. Eagles have a pretty athletic O line yet BJ runs like 2 Runs, inside/ outside zone off an RPO. Its just sad. BJs out of the box run play yesterday was to line hurts up under center and run a flip sweep to swift for 2yards, WOW the creativity niners will never see it coming or know what to do against a play thats existed since the creation of football😒 I mean seriously what the heck is BJ doing all week Shannahan puts in a whole play books worth of plays that have multiple motion and misdirection lined up in varying formations with varying personnel and BJ puts in 1 generic run play from tecmo bowl🤡

They may have racked up yards, but they put up 6 points in their first 4 drives where they could have set the tone for the game...instead they refused to run the ball and had terrible red zone playcalling, which has not shown any improvement all season and could cost us in the playoffs.

December 4, 20232 yr Author So no one else suspects some sort of weird AJ-Hurts-BJ dynamic going on? It seemed like our offense became a lot more pass and AJ-oriented after his sideline tirade. I mean, he and Hurts are buddies and BJ probably owes his job to Hurts.... Hurts wasnt forcing the ball to AJ last year as much as this year. On all those long drop backs yesterday he was waiting for AJ to get open.
December 4, 20232 yr Again I’m no Johnson fan, but this is stupid. The running game was not working and the Eagles couldn’t stick with it because the 49ers scored 6 touchdowns in a row. The offense isn’t without blame but this is mostly on the D.
December 6, 20232 yr Saving it for playoffs bc Swift is made out of glass 🤷🏻♂️? Who knows, all I know is 2017, when we finally started running the ball, our whole offense woke up and helped cover the deficiencies on defense bc we owned the clock. Just bc it's a "passing league" doesn't mean you completely abandon it. I bet they're sitting there scratching their heads wondering why the RPO and play action don't work ever.... maybe bc you haven't established the run.... it's not rocket science

And in your first example they doubled down on the ripoff by then calling a dropped Aiyuk pass a TD. AJ Brown got straightup tackled before the ball got to him a handful of times, not once was PI called on it...and to make it even worse, Greg Olsen called it "good coverage" with a straight face.
