Everson Griffen teases joining the Philadelphia Eagles

Is Everson Griffen the Philadelphia Eagles’ "big move”?

With everyone’s attention turned towards star defensive ends Jadeveon Clowney and Yannick Nagakoue, another elite pass rusher has seemingly been forgotten about as of late. A 4x Pro Bowler with 74.5 career sacks, Everson Griffen is a name that has been linked to the Philadelphia Eagles for the majority of the offseason. After his latest Twitter comments, those rumors are about to be gaslit even further.

Griffen is a ten year verteran who’s spent the entirety of the last decade playing for the Minnesota Vikings. During that time he’s established himself as one of the league’s premier edge rushers, despite never really receiving the notoriety that the likes of a Khalil Mack or a JJ Watt receive.

Griffen has recorded double digit sacks on three separate occasions, recording a career-high 13.0 during the team’s NFC Championship game run in 2017 (we all know how that ended). Even at 32 years of age in 2019, Griffen was widely productive in the Vikings’ system, recording eight sacks, 11 TFLs, and 24 QB hits.

The Philadelphia Eagles have become famous in recent years for their emphasis on a rotation of pass rushers in Jim Schwartz’ defense. Veterans like Chris Long, Vinny Curry, and Michael Bennett have all been super productive for the Eagles in recent years, despite not playing traditional "starter roles”.

Griffen turns 33 this December, so the days of him being an every down edge rusher are likely coming to and end. However, he would surely be a prime candidate for success operating as the Eagles go-to substitute across the defensive line. While the team currently has guys like Josh Sweat and Malik Jacskson who could fill that role, Griffen would without question be a substantial upgrade in that department.

NFL analyst Brian "Baldy” Baldinger tweeted out earlier this week that he had been hearing whispers of the Eagles pulling off a big move this week, and Griffen could easily be the addition he was alluding to. While it might not be as flashy as a Clowney signing or a Ngakoue trade, it would without question be a move for Eagles fans to get excited about.

To add on to all the hysteria, Everson Griffen posted a tweet Sunday evening alluding to such a move. Responding to the comment that "Griffen should be at the top of the Eagles, and every other team’s, wish list”, the veteran defensive end simply responded with "AMEN BROTHER”.

Howie Roseman is normally pretty active around this time of year in terms of adding cheap talent, so it wouldn’t be surprising at all to see him pull the trigger on an instant playmaker like Griffen. Stealing him from the Vikings would make the move all that much sweeter as well.

How would people feel about this? He's been a really productive and really good player but 33? Hmm...

Another 1 year deal for an aging veteran added to compensate for not hitting it big in the draft. Hey, might get 1 really good year out of him but then he probably moves on like P-Rob in 2017.

lol anyone reading that response from Griffin as an indicator he prefers to play here obviously skipped over the "and every other team’s wish list”.

Seems like this has been overcome by events. Baldy's big news was the Jason Peters signing.

Howie is King of 1 year deals. Our SB team had a few big named 1 year deal players. Would love to add him to the roster.

I don't really see that as big news, I've been expecting it all off season.

I guess some would say it's big news as he's a future HoF player but yeah I mean I was also expecting it so its not really big news.

If he can play a chris long role on a cheap deal I'd do it. Really want to see what sweat and hall can do though, so it's a bit contradictory.

I would like to see what one or the other can do but Sweat as the #3 and Hall as the #4? I mean that's pretty shocking depth really.
