Jalen Mills says he’s going to have a breakout season at safety

Jalen Mills says he’s expecting a "breakout” year following his switch from cornerback to safety this offseason.

pThe Eagles defensive back made the position swap upon re-signing with the team in March. After starting 34 games at cornerback over the past four seasons, Mills will now fill the strong safety spot once occupied by his mentor and former team captain, Malcolm Jenkins.

While the Eagles have been linked to trade rumors involving Jets safety Jamal Adams, Mills told 97.5 The Fanatics’ Rob Maaddi that he believes he can handle the task of replacing Jenkins this season.

"I feel like at my position, my competitiveness and the position that I (know) this Eagles defense is going to be able to put me in to make the plays that I know I can make, that I’m going to have a breakout season,” Mills said to Maaddi. "I’m ready for it, so as far as when we’re talking about any type of other players and bringing in other guys, especially at the safety position, I definitely feel like I can hold my own.”

Mills will be making his position switch during an unprecedented offseason for the Eagles. Following a limited virtual offseason program, the team will take part in an unsettled training camp starting on July 28.

While the NFL has decided to cut the preseason to just two games due to the coronavirus pandemic, the NFLPA has suggested wiping out the entire exhibition slate.

Despite the NFLPA’s suggestion, the veteran defensive back says he would actually prefer to play in the preseason.

Mills says it’s important to understand the coronavirus protocols prior to Week 1′s matchup against Washington.

"I think we should play those two games,” Mills said. "The reason is we need to know how everything is going to work on game day.”

Yes, he will have the best season ever spent on the couch.

I mean at least he can't get beat deep right? Although he probably still could manage it.
