He had the 3rd highest coverage grade w/no QB pressure in 2023 (86.8) and the highest forced incompletion rate (16.7%) of any of the UFA's at the position.  He is only 25 and will be looking for his payday coming off of his rookie contract.  I cannot imagine the Bears letting him walk, but he did ask for a trade last year and is wanting a record contract.  But, if we are looking for a long-term solution at CB1, this is the best proven commodity that could potentially hit the market.  For comparison, L'Jarius Sneed seems to be a hot name for the Eagles to pursue, but he is a product of the pressure Spag's front puts on opposing QB's. Sneed grades out at significantly worse w/no pressure (71.5) than Johnson and forces less incompletions (13.3%).

I’d have a lot of interest in this but I’m not sure how it’ll work in terms of the money? We are investing a lot in CB as it is. Now I appreciate we can’t go with Bradberry so we need to move him on but Johnson is probably going to get paid.

Chicago will likely tag him.  I don't have a concern with the cap manipulation.  The NFL has set up so many loopholes for smart GMs to exploit.  It's the primary reason Howie has been considered a really good GM despite his track record in the draft.  The primary issue will be the tag.  If not tagged, then it would come down to the value FO views versus the value Johnson's agent wants to get and the distance between the two.  Obviously, the player has input and would need to know who the new DC is and what's the philosophy as Jaylon excels in man press, not so much in a Cover 3.  By the time the league year ends, the DC will hopefully be resolved.  Some players don't want to play in Philly because of the local media and the knowledgeable and passionate fanbase.  So, all of these factors come into play with a free agent.

But as for a name for the IWTETG, I can't think of a better player.  Fills a huge need, he is young, and Bradberry's contract is expiring next season if I am not mistaken.  This is the result of years and years of drafting this position so poorly.  I remember a time when we were the envy of the league in drafting CB's.  We signed Troy Vincent as a UFA from Mia in the mid 90's and Ray Rhodes (I think it was RR) drafted Bobby Taylor who finished 3rd in DROY voting.  AR drafted Lito Shepphard and Sheldon Brown in the same draft class (2002) along with Michael Lewis (SS).  A 1st round pick and 2 2nd round picks that year on DB's.  I recall a meltdown that he "wasted" all of the early draft capital on DB's (even though that's the same draft class that yielded Westbrook).  After that season, DB drafting went down the tubes and probably has never really recovered.  JR Reed and Sean Considine followed, and I think FA was the answer from then on (Asante Samuel comes to mind).  Littered since then with the Nate Allen's and Quitin Demps of the world.  Big swing and miss on Sidney Jones by Howie one year there too.  I am sure I am missing some more names that other posters will remember (actually Eric Rowe just came to mind), but you get the picture.  We've been absolutely abysmal at drafting corner OR safety for years now.

They'll probably tag and trade him

That is most likely what will happen.  My guess would be a trade to whatever team Bellicheat ends up coaching.  He is a young Gilmore,

Slay and Bradberry for Johnson

Slay and Bradberry for a hobo's Johnson

FYP

I think they make Bradford a post 6/1 cut and start the season with Slay and Ringo as the starters. They need to draft a good young corner but Howie’s yet to do that.
