Eagles Buzz: Sean Desai’s ‘disconnect’ with his players led to his demotion and eventual firing

When the Eagles demoted defensive coordinator Sean Desai with just four games to go in the regular season, it came as a shock. Philly’s defense certainly wasn’t living up to expectations, but from the outside looking in, it didn’t seem like a demotion was the best course of action.

But as we know, there’s always stuff going on behind the scenes that we’re not keen on as fans. Per Geoff Mosher of the Inside The Birds podcast, Desai’s disconnect with his players is what really led to his demotion and eventual firing, not so much his scheme or coaching style.

On Friday’s episode of Inside The Birds, Mosher stated:

"There’s a difference between being smart, well-educated, and considered a really good schemer. Which Sean Desai was when he got to the Eagles. That’s what people would tell us about him. And then also being a great leader, connecting with your players, understanding what their needs are versus your needs are, making it work when times are tough. And that is the area that I didn’t realize was impacted the most.

I didn’t realize until talking to some people down here, agents who represent some players, on just how big the gap was between where the Eagles were on defense and where Sean Desai was. And those two factions not being able to meet in the middle and having an understanding of each other.”

In the same episode, Mosher also reported that one defensive player refused to talk to Desai as the season wore on. And just about a week or so before Desai was relegated to the box, we found out that the defensive secondary was actually coming up with their own scouting reports, per safety Kevin Byard himself.

This is the moment we should’ve known the Eagles season was over

The inexperience on the Eagles coaching staff was palpable in 2023. When crap started hitting the fan, they had no idea what to do. That goes for both Desai and the recently fired Brian Johnson.

Entering 2024, the Eagles will have a completely revamped staff, with veteran coaches all across the board. It’ll be the second year in a row where the team will have two new coordinators. And while that’s less than ideal, at least we know Vic Fangio and Kellen Moore know what they’re doing – something we couldn’t say with any level of confidence about Desai or Johnson.

That also goes for Sirianni who wasn’t able to right the ship or do anything to just stem the bleeding.
