43 officers raid Pa. home, injure family over incorrect drug tip

The Anglemeyer family, none of whom were ever charged with any crimes, suffered a variety of injuries during the Feb. 23, 2018, raid. One officer smashed his tactical shield into 76-year-old Ada’s face, which sent her flying backward, the lawsuit said. The blow broke multiple teeth and one vertebra.

Gotta bash those 76 year olds with shields. None of the family ever charged.

A federal judge in eastern Pennsylvania previously ruled in favor of the officers; that they were entitled to qualified immunity.

But the appellate court reversed that decision, saying any reasonable officer would have known that the officers’ force was unlawful in light of the facts of the case.

Of course the judge granted them immunity, Open and shut case. The officers did nothing wrong.

How do qualified immunity and compensation work?  Can an officer not be personally liable but the police department has to compensate the victims for damages or injuries?

Is "Incorrect drug tip" the 2024 version of swatting?

i am waiting to get all of the information on this before i start taking a side.

have we heard from KolomboZ yet on the background checks of the victims ? lets make sure Ada didn't have any ezpass tolls in collections before we go saying she is innocent.

Who'd they vote for?

No doubt they were trained to do that and more. Surpirsed no one was shot.

Well, first off from a CQB standpoint shields are completely Fn worthless for a multitude of reasons. You can’t go hands on, you’re not very mobile, you can’t shoot for ish with one, and you only have a pistol.  Riot shields have their place during riots and for use in prisons. Ballistic shields are just a complete joke. Just take the risk like an adult.

IMO from interacting with them when I was on, your average PSP Trooper is usually both squared away with their ability to function and knowledge of the job as well as just their overall personality. But the last couple of times there were large scale wooded manhunts, it was fed tactical teams that actually located the suspect and not a PSP SERT team. Now it could be the Feds just kept getting luckier, but it’s kind of embarrassing that someone else pissed in your yard and did a better job than you did, and then did it again.

Another thing of note is that search warrants don’t always result in finding evidence, even if the warrant itself is valid. You just need a magistrate to agree to PC, and the warrant is good. (And PC is just proof of a fair probability .) Article is paywalled, so I don’t know if the warrant was served correctly or if some crime trooper/ AG investigator put an address in wrong. If the latter it’s a complete F up. You double check work for a reason.

In my experience old people are either completely awesome or have had their frontal lobes turned to mush from the decades of leaded gas exposure. There’s no happy medium.  I’m guessing grandma wasn’t complying with verbal commands. Could be that she was either freaked the F out or being confrontational. That said, you don’t bash her with a shield for that. It’s where you’d go hands on, you know, if you weren’t carrying the shield that you should have left on the truck.  Makes me wonder if all the instructors on the teams learned how to CQB in the 80s or something.

Bill,

It reads like a disorganized task force operation. 43 officers and they hit the WRONG building looking for what? a Meth lab? The correct address is on everything up to and including the written raid plan used in the pre-raid briefing. How is it adulterated on the search warrant application? Operationally it's a total sh** show. Now throw in beating up old people and yeah, I ask where's the competent leadership? This has all of the earmarks of an A.G. run operation but the article points to PSP Troopers specifically. Therefore, regarding them, I'll sadly offer this opinion...

The PSP Department has been in decline for some time now. Lately they've become so desperate for new hires that they've removed the college requirement for applicants. As you might expect, there are still some outstanding individuals who are exemplary members of law enforcement, but their numbers are dwindling. Too many joining whose goal it is to get promoted as fast as possible, and as often as possible, while doing zero police work. I'm sure you've met the type. They lead to piss poor supervision and eventually, people in leadership positions who not only have no leadership ability whatsoever, but who actually direct others down the wrong path and sometimes needlessly into harms way.

Times are ever changing and in my opinion, not necessarily for the better. As time goes by I suspect we'll read articles like this one more often. It doesn't have to be this way. Hopefully, the public will demand excellence in law enforcement and the pendulum will swing back in that direction. We'll see.
