Mekhi Wingo (DL, LSU) -- DRAFTED BY DETROIT #189

If you love the athleticism of Braden Fiske, but round 2 is too early for you (may even sneak in to later round 1), Wingo is the ideal fall back plan.

Wingo is one of seemingly very few young prospects in this draft. A true Junior.

Wingo has a different build than Fiske. Fiske is 6'4'' 292, while Wingo is just 6'0'' 284 but he has the stockier build, and actually played a ton of DE at LSU despite his body type.

Wingo actually has the longer arms by 1 inch. He has 32 inch arms.

Fiske has blinding quickness for a DT, and yet Wingo with his shorter stockier build has the faster 10 yard split. Wingo has 1.64 compared to Fiske's 1.68.

Wingo ran a 4.85 40 time which is also fantastic for someone with a DT build.

His quickness at the snap is very apparent when watching him play. He stands apart from everyone else.

Mekhi earned the honor of wearing LSU's #18 which is a symbol of his football character.

He apparently played most of his junior season injured. He then missed the final 5 games of the season but still came back to play in the bowl game which showed scouts the guy loves to play. In that game came up with 2 impact sacks with one forcing a punt, and the other being in crunch time as Wisconsin was attempting a last minute comeback.

He is a gamer. And also very active in the community.

Hes already not projected to go very high, and Im sure his size will keep him down in the mid rounds.

He looks like a great rotational DT for us, and possible replacement for Milton Williams if we choose not to re-sign him.  Wingo does seem to have starting potential if he can prove his size wont hold him back. Regardless, I think he will have success even if he is a rotational DT/DT for his career.
