To be fair, the Chiefs were docked a third round pick when they contacted Jeremy Maclin  before they were officially allowed to. So there is a precedent. But it’s not clear how similar this case would be to that one.

The OP said that the NFL said we were tampering as if it were a foregoing conclusion

The NFL is saying we tampered to get Saquon so we probably get punished.

The league is/was investigating the Eagles and the Falcons for contacting Barkley and Cousins ahead of the "legal tampering" window opening. The GMs of those teams allegedly contacted the players directly before they were officially allowed. It's a minor misdemeanor at worst, and likely nothing will come of it for the Eagles.

The "fake news" posts are a great example of the cluelessness that permeates our society these days.

To slightly clarify a minor point, the league only allows teams to contact agents during legal tampering, but not the player. The Birds, through James Franklin, supposedly contacted Barkley directly. Most likely Franklin misheard something and got his facts wrong. Barkley is said to have clarified that Howie didn’t contact him directly.

I highly doubt James Franklin misheard or misunderstood a conversation ...

Prove it.

At the end of the day, we all know that tampering is rampant.  Think D'Andre Swift and the Bears were able to reach an agreement 15 minutes after the legal tampering period commenced?

There's nothing to prove. James Franklin heard something second hand. He wasn't present. He was relaying something he heard.

Why do you think the "broken telephone game" (aka Pass the message) is entertaining to people at all?

As for Swift (and TJ Edwards last year), it's not unreasonable for a player and agent to have gone over all the options preceding free agency and enter the first day of free agency prepared. Teams clearly are prepared as well. So if a team wants to make a splash signing early, it probably is willing to overpay a bit. If a player really wants to go to a certain team, he and his agent probably go in willing to settle for less than their market value. Getting the deal done sooner not only lessens the stressfulness of looking for work (or an employee), it also ensures you get to pick from a better pool. Waiting too long can be costly in more ways than one.

Here is a scenario that could have been what happened:  Saquon's agent has Saquon get on the other line of a call between the agent and the Eagles, without telling the Eagles that Saquon is listening to the call.  Or Saquon is physically in the room with the agent during a speakerphone call with the Eagles without revealing that Saquon is there.  Saquon then tells Franklin about the Eagles pitch from first-hand knowledge, and Franklin talks about it to the press that way.  But the Eagles never know that Saquon was on the call.

I do not think in that scenario that the Eagles would be found guilty of tampering.

Franklin is a joke. The most overrated coach in college football. He gets paid top money to be average. He's 12-25 against AP 25. Trash

I would agree. A clear and obvious attempt to circumvent the rule would be needed here I’d think.

It's pure bullsheeet. Even the Giants didn't complain or make a fuss when the media started talking BS. Much ado about NOTHING.
