March 16, 20241 yr We needed a LB, we got one that’s played at a high level in the past and is an upgrade over what we have. If White can get back to anywhere near what he was in 2020 then this is going to be fun.

At one time this guy was a legit linebacker and somehow found himself benched last season. I mean all of these signings and trades have some type of issue. We are hoping it all works out, but only time will tell.

Prior to that he was a pro bowl level player. He’s a risk, but I think people consider him an upgrade because the Eagles had so many injuries at linebacker last season they couldn’t keep up. The truth is Howie hasn’t really addressed the Eagles linebacker situation. He’s once again throwing bodies at the problem and hoping someone sticks. He shouldn’t have let Edwards walk without at least offering him a contract.
March 18, 20241 yr The biggest hope is that one or more of these free agent LBs we recently signed pans out and become a solid player here. I don't think the chances of that happening are very good. The next best case scenario is that we address the unit in next month's draft (hopefully with 2 decent picks ... one on day 2 and another with one of our first picks on day 3) that can finally provide some stability in the middle of the defense and that the FAs can be just "good enough" to get us through a season.

I didn't think Edwards stood out, sure he had a lot of tackles but most were 5+ yards behind the LOS. The Eagles depend on the DL too much, I don't care how good a DL is there will be plays where the RB gets past them, that's when you need a LB to keep the yardage afterwards to a minimum, the Eagles haven't had that sort of LB since the days of Buddy Ryan.

Edwards was better than what we had and he solidified the linebacker situation for us. This team has been influx at the position since he left.
March 18, 20241 yr I'm intrigued by this signing/player. Hopefully he can get back to what he once was.
March 19, 20241 yr Certainly can’t be worse than the lbs from last year. The only thing that sucks is it’s another 1 year rental.

Yep- that's why all the 1 year "prove yourself" contracts are being handed out.

At some point surely they’ve got to get a bit of stability at the position? If White plays well they’ve got to try and sign him long term. But of course we know they won’t.

April 3, 20241 yr Tampa is my local team and even though I bleed Eagle Green I do watch a good deal of Tampa games as well as attend them. White is the classic wow you one minute and make you throw a shoe at the TV the next minute. Instincts are below average, and he does a lot of guessing. When he guesses right he can make the great play, but because the instincts are average at best ... he guesses wrong a lot as well. I think we would get the most out of him as a rush LB where he doesn't have to think too much. Maybe now with Reddick gone we will use him a little more in that role than Tampa did.

Just let him get after the passer. Though the concern there is that our LBs aren’t great in coverage so it’s not like we have a guy ready to replace him on those downs where we want our LBs to cover.

He has no experience as an on ball linebacker, and they signed two on ball linebackers in free agency in Huff and Braun, plus have Smith. My guess is that they figured they could live with his terrible run defense because he is really good at coverage. And hopefully the rbs get stopped before they get to him or the safeties can clean up his mess if they don't.

I don't think that's the main plan for White. He's here to compete for an off-ball LB spot. Don't expect Fangio to just all of a sudden start blitzing a lot. There wasn't a lot of fanfare around this signing and it feels like a lot of Eagles fans are taking a pessimistic view of what kind of a player he is. He played virtually every snap for the Bucs last season until he hurt his foot in December and missed 3 games. After he returned , his snap counts fluctuated, but I believe it was mostly because he just wasn't 100%. As of right now, I expect White is the frontrunner to play next to Dean. If both players stay healthy, we should see better results from our LBs in 2024. White is only signed for 2024, so I'd still like to add a LB early in the draft.

As far as safety, Blankenship and CJGJ are both really good run defenders. And I think our safeties looked bad last year because our lbs were so bad in both run and pass coverage. At least one issue has been addressed, and arguably the more important aspect.
