May 31, 20241 yr Yeah, I don't really get the hate for Gainwell on here. Sure he's not a superstar RB, but he blocks well, runs hard, and catches the ball relatively well for a RB. Good number two who can start for us in a pinch. I'm definitely comfortable going into the season with only three RBs and a fourth on the practice squad.

Gainwell was the backup last season and has been a backup for all 3 seasons. During those 3 seasons he has averaged 4.4 ypc, 500 yards (combined rushing and receiving) and 4TDs per year in the regular season. He has also added 304 combined yards and 2 TDs in the playoffs as a backup averaging 5 ypc in those 5 games. ... and when Gainwell has to block he's a lot more reliable than this: Meaningless statistic as the Eagles had perhaps the best OL in football last year and Boston Scott averaged 4.3 yds per carry. Trey Sermon averaged 4.6 yds per carry last year. The point is, our starter is very injury prone, and a below average back-up is not ideal if they have to step in as the starter for multiple games as was the case for the Giants.

Sweet Lou Nichols III is what the Eagles needed, namely a closer, someone that can run the clock out with hardnosed running when you have a lead, the dumbsheets will more than likely cut the guy in favor of Milton or Davis-Price, both of whom are garbage. If I were calling the shots Gainwell would be cut, I see nothing in the guy.

It's not a meaningless stat. He was above the league average and there were other teams with good O-lines as well. That's how you get averages. You have the best, the worst, and everything in between. Stats are also affected by the quality of opponent as well as the (game) situation. You just don't like that the statistical evidence which is real and tangible (unlike opinions) doesn't back up your argument --- so you are attempting to write it off. Typically, teams aren't going to have some veteran backup that is as good as or nearly as good as the starter. That's why they are backups. Gainwell was given a chance last year to fend off a couple experienced challengers for the starting role. Ultimately, Swift won the starting gig, relegating Gainwell to backup status. Gainwell continues to be a good all-purpose backup that has experience (including postseason). As I've stated, they drafted Shipley to strengthen that room. Maybe you can shed some light on who this proven jobless vet that has no injury history is that would come in here and beat both Gainwell and Shipley for the primary backup role so you can sleep better.
