The Eagles signed guard Max Scharping today. What is the story behind the story? Steen hasn't made sufficient progress, Keegan and McMahon don' tlooklike they'll be ready,
HEnnessey is injury prone, or all of the above.

He has a ton of experience at both guard spots and some snaps at center as well.  Can’t hurt to have him in the mix … best players earn roster spots (starting and depth).

Story behind the story is depth and competition. Nothing more. If they were giving up on Steen at RG and needed a starter then they would have drafted or traded for one.

Depth that is right on the "do they keep him or cut him" line.

They sign roster bubble types & camp bodies all throughout the year, to kick the tires and see if they even make the final roster.

Inevitably, some fans interpret every random signing as some statement.

He is not chopped liver. Has some starting experience. May be not a starter but a very good competitor for the depth position. Finally some more competition for backup guard spots. I like the signing.

Waived by the team that drafted him and gave him starting experience.
Claimed off waivers by  Cincinnati and got a start in a playoff game due to injury.
Resigned by Cincinnati, no starts.  No attempt to bring him back, and we pick him up in June.

At best he is chopped liver adjacent.

We had an open spot, didn't we?

Pretty much a camp body.  The only way he makes the final roster is if Becton stinks or is injured.  I do see him taking the place of LaRaven Clark as an experienced practice squad OL in a break the glass situation.

At first I thought you were talking about Cris Carter.

Then I realized you were just saying that no player has ever been picked up off of waivers, then cut has ever has any value.

Good point. It’s a near mirror image to the Cris Carter situation.

Again, total mirror image.

This guy, a 2nd round pick, began his career starting, then ended up being released while on a rookie contract. Cincinnati picked him up off waivers, then resigned him for one more year.  This resulted in having a total of one start, due to injury not performance, there.  THEN no one else picks him up so he’s sitting around in June.  I.E. the reason why I don’t put stock into his starting experience.

You gave me a counterpoint of a dude cut due to drug addiction followed by 3 undrafted guys who got waived before they even got a shot.  I’m really not even sure what point you are trying to make considering my original post was a reply to someone else.

Yeah it's kicking the tyres on someone that was drafted fairly high but is available to see if there's anything salvageable for Stout to work with. Depth is always good.

One thing is for sure, the Eagles have really brought in a lot of interior OL this offseason. The depth at OT could use some more legit competition, but that's a much harder position to find in June.

Hey you work over here for 20 years and see how your spelling goes, I still manage defense and offense most of the time.

Strictly speaking dual national but guess Britain is home now, born in US, moved over here as a kid, then back to the US for about 8 years then got offered a job in UK, got married, had kids, haven't been back to US for a while now, what family I have over there now are distant cousins.

No such things as camp bodies in the NFL anymore......especially when you have the best OL coach in the NFL working with these guys.  I believe when the eagles sign offensive linemen like Becton and Scharping, Stoutland was consulted and they took a good look at them.    These guys are 1st and 2nd round picks who went to lousy teams and maybe, the eagles can restart their careers.

Stoutland turned a rugby player into a full time starter at LT with Mailata, Kelce started making pro bowls after Stoutland arrived.  He's taken late round draft choices and turned them into productive players.
