He’s undergoing a position change and has almost zero (or maybe it even is zero) live action real snaps at RG. Bechton is a fun ultra talented flier. Hennessey is the safety net and because of that there’s probably a pretty high chance it ends up being him. All 3 have some questions. Maybe it has to lean on Stoutland to work his magic and get one of them serviceable at RG. Less than ideal, IMHO.
July 12, 20241 yr I think it depends on how well Becton adjusts to RG with Stoutland's teaching.....and if he's healthy. If he adjusts to Stoutland's liking, I think he's the guy.

Also there's Sharpling and the 5th round rookie and the FA from the Falcons at C/OG. So if Steen doesn't show quickly he can adapt to RG he would be a great trade chip as you can rarely trade for a young good left tackle and Steen showed right away he has the ability to play there. If Howie were to accept calls on him I bet there would be numerous teams inquiring as protecting the QB's blind side makes LT the 2nd most important position in football. Could we get a good young starting DE for him? If I were Howie I would look into that.

I don't think Steen is sufficiently noteworthy as a former 3rd round pick with zero NFL experience that he'll have trade value if he loses the RG battle. He'd likely be worth more to us as the top backup versatile OL than he would to anyone else. Until he proves to actually be a quality starter, every team in the NFL has their own Tyler Steen (young drafted OL with potential who is competing for a job). I'd probably set his trade value well, well below a young starting DE. More like his equivalent across the LOS...a young DL who was drafted rounds 2-4 in the last 2-3 years and never caught on with some team's defense. This is all under the assumption that he gets beat out for the starting RG spot. Maybe he runs with it and is great for us.

You can't trade for young starting quality left tackles but we have a young pro bowl left tackle already. I think there would be keen interest from multiple teams for Steen if Howie were to indicate he was listening to offers. An early 3rd round pick is too high to bury on the bench if he has high value on the market. Let's see how he does at RG. Maybe he learned how to play if this off season. We will know in 6-7 weeks from now
July 21, 20241 yr Author Seeing a lot more chatter these days that Becton could very well be the starter at RG. If he's a player the Eagles want to retain long term, I could see them making him a starter this year. Look what the team did with Cam Jurgens last year. Even if they don't envision him playing at RG long term, he may be viewed as being so good that they have to put him somewhere - and there's an opening at RG at the moment.

There isn't a lot more chatter that Becton is in line to start, he stood in at guard in mini camp because Dickerson missed a few days and that's pretty much the entire basis for the story. He'll make the roster as swing tackle because he's a massive step up from Johnson / Driscoll level guys, but he's an outside shot at guard.

The thing for me with Becton is he isn't stepping in to cover at Tackle, he has to be better than Fred Johnson who's been depth at Guard at 3 of the 5 teams he's been at since '19, surely?
July 30, 20241 yr Opportunity to take a look at Becton at right guard. There isn't currently an opening at either tackle spot, there IS an open slot at right guard.

August 4, 20241 yr I think Steen gets the nod in the beginning IF he stays healthy and isn't out more than a day or so. Becton will eventually be the guy.

There's a void at RG and LJ is a year older, has missed time each of the past couple of years with injury, and the team has a bad record when he's out.

We can hope LJ can stay healthy but right now we simply don’t know what play we are going to get from whoever plays at RG. It feels like a bit of an oversight during this offseason.

Well, Becton has been a tackle for an all of his career and is still adjusting to playing guard.....he's big, agile and moves really well. He had injury issues with the jets, struggled when he came back and they gave up on him but so far, has been healthy here. And I think a guy with 1st round talent being coached up by Stoutland is a great combination. He was raw when he come out in the draft, probably started too soon, then got hurt 2 straight years. I just think if he stays healthy, Stoutland can really max out his potential which I think is more than Steen's.
August 5, 20241 yr Becton is going to be THE steal of free agency. The Eagles found a winning lottery ticket by getting him.
August 7, 20241 yr Not really liking any of the choices and I really hope Howie didn’t underestimate this position.
August 8, 20241 yr I'll say Steen. Before the draft, the plan was Steen. They drafted 2 players who didn't have RG on their resume. Looked like Steen. Then they got Becton, a top of the 1st round Tackle. Immediately, they said "he's a Swing Tackle". Ok, sounds good to me. Steen stays at RG, Becton is a Swing Tackle. Then they say Becton can backup at 4 spots. Even better. Steen is signed on a cheap rookie deal for this year and 2 more years. Good to have that happening. Becton is probably better. 364 pounds and 5.10 40, good numbers. But having a solid RG who you drafted and will keep getting better and better for 3 years - plus a great ras guy who can backup at 4 of 5 spots is a great bonus that you are happy to have. You can do ok with Steen there, they did ok with Jurgens there last year. The Eagles would have bigger problems if Mailata or Lane were out. And that's why it's good to have Becton. And if Steen plays, and sucks, there's Becton to back him up. Additionally, the versatile freakbeast attributes that Becton brings to the table allows him to go in for any of 4 players, allowing any of those 4 OL to pop out to a skill position. Like Mailata, who wants to be a short yardage running back (or play on the short yardage team). Becton in for Mailata, Mailata to TE or to the backfield. I want a solid RG locked in and learning the position, getting better, solid, more solid, most solid. And being able to do this cheaply for 3 years. Sounds good, I want this. Try to make this work until it doesn't. That's Steen. And I want a versatile freakbeast who can do so many things. Backup to Steen if he sucks. Backup to 3 great players that the Eagles don't want to be replaced by someone who sucks. And Becton can be 6th OL Blocking TE, downblocking, and with the size and speed, could catch a short pass. HS basketball player.

I think he probably has the upper hand because he has more NFL experience at RG than Becton (I know I know he's only played what 1 game if that?). He also will be favoured because he was a draft pick and so long term that would be the better outcome for this team. But his struggles are noteworthy and I think the fact that Becton has been playing there since Steen came back from injury could be telling. Unfortunately the reality is neither are great options and it may be that our answer at RG isn't currently on the roster? I kind of hope the way things have gone so far that this is the case.
