I think Howie made a massive error by drafting Cooper DeJean instead of one of the top OGs in last year's draft.

Considering the depth we have at CB, there really wasn't a need to trade up for him.

I would have rather them drafted a high end OG or C - reports out of Dallas are that Cooper Beebe has looked great and could be a starter for them this year.

We have depth at corner now but, at the time of the draft it was slay, a washed Bradbury and  Rodgers who hasn't played in over a year. Dejean might also be able to step in at safety. The secondary was horrific at the end of last year. The line had jergans and steen that were drafted fairly early to fill those spots and the oline wasn't really an issue last year.

you said "Who winds up as the starting right guard", so...

What you're missing is that Becton is a freak - and he has too much physical talent, at least from the coaches point of view, to let him sit on the bench.  I think this is much more about Becton than about Steen (who hasn't helped his cause with his ankle injury)

Nah, I'm not missing that he has "physical talent" for a huge guy.  He's a player that was a bust in NY and was sitting out there in free agency for well over a month before signing with the Eagles.  NFL teams covet talent along the OL but nobody thought much of Becton to be in any hurry to sign him.  That right there tells you that something is off with him.

And if a guy like that can come in and take the starting RG job away from Steen, regardless of Steen's injury, then that says that the coaches don't think Steen is ready because they don't usually let a player lose a starting job due to injury.

RG could be a problem this year.

So it looks like Becton is starting week one.  Steen has been hobbled a good chunk of the summer.  Becton has his own history with injuries.  The question in the poll is who starts most games at RG.  Right now, Becton has the upper hand.  Absent injury or poor play, it looks like Becton right now.

Becton did well at RG.  Solid against the rush and held his ground well.  Good for the team and good for him to get his career back on track.

Agreed. Let's hope that type of play continues. He can be a beast in the run game.

That’s really encouraging to see Becton really dominating. You’d hope given more time at the position he’ll get better (and hopefully he can stay healthy). Good start.

Becton is the real deal.  Extend him Howie!

This could turn out to be a steal for the Eagles.  Great under the radar signing.  The RG position seems to have been upgraded from one of uncertainty to a position of strength.  I hope Becton has a long, productive career with the Eagles.  He's only 25!!

From my understanding, a lot of the issues he had in NY seemed to be nagging injuries - and very high expectations.  He actually seemed to play well when 100% healthy - and that was at tackle.  Looks like he may have found his niche in the NFL at guard.

If this OLine stays healthy.......:flex:

Well, Becton has been a revelation this season.  But he's only signed on a one year deal.  Any chance the team brings him back with Steen waiting in the wings?  It'll cost a lot of money and there are other players who need extending as well.

Funny how Howie threw all that money at Huff when some of his lesser moves have been flat out home run moves. People criticized signing Barkley mare than giving Huff all that money too. Becton has been a pro bowl level guard. Baun is out there making plays and being a game wrecker. Can they afford to bring these guys back?

How has that worked out?

Fortunately, it has worked out well.  But you're cherry-picking a comment.  My main point was that if Becton started over Steen, that was a serious indictment of Steen.  And what I stated in your quoted comment was, and still is, true (except that RG turned out not to be a problem thus far).

I don't necessarily agree with your main point either. TJ Edwards starting over Dean as a rookie was not a serious indictment of Dean. It had more to do with Edwards playing LB at a top-3 level in the NFL. The same can be said about Baun over Trotter Jr. One player having a breakout season does not define his positional competitor.

We will have to disagree then.  By all accounts all offseason, Steen was the starter heading into camp and he lost his starting job to a guy that was sitting out there that no other team cared enough about to sign him one month into FA.

Steen was a 3rd round pick and in his 2nd year.  Edwards, the vet, starting over a rookie in Dean (who went on IR, btw) is not at all a surprise.

Baun playing over a 5th round rookie is also to be expected.  Neither rookie year Dean nor Trotter Jr were slated to be a starter and then got supplanted.  But, Steen was and did.

All that said, Steen at least looked capable during his fill-ins this year so all hope is not lost...hopefully.
