Saquon Barkley "fully aware of how far” he is from rushing record

Eagles running back Saquon Barkley played only 49 of 80 offensive snaps Sunday. The team never announced an injury in-game, and Barkley said after the game he was "dealing with a little something” but didn’t elaborate.

Barkley was on the practice report Wednesday but not for injury. He did not participate with a load management day.

"Your body is going to tell you exactly what you need,” Barkley said, via Jeff Neiburg of the Philadelphia Inquirer. "The beauty of playing in 2024 is you have so much data, so much science. Trust in that; trust in the trainers; trust in the strength guys, and just listen and be coachable.”

Barkley finished Sunday with 19 carries for 65 yards, giving him 1,688 rushing yards for the season. That leaves him on pace to rush for just over 2,000 yards this season, but he no longer is on pace to surpass Eric Dickerson’s single-season record of 2,105 yards.

"Nothing changed from last week,” Barkley said of the rushing record. "I’m fully aware of how far I am. I’m not scared of it.”

Barkley, who is averaging 120.6 yards per game, needs to average 139 rushing yards in the Eagles’ final three games to break the record.

"If I don’t get it, I’m not going to be depressed,” Barkley said. "If I get it, I’m not going to be that crazy happy either. It’s a record. Records are meant to be broken. My mindset is focused on winning games and competing for a championship, and that’s the only thing that really matters to me.”

I like the guy but he's just trying to be humble because breaking a 40 year old record is definitely going to get some crazy happy reaction from him lol

That would be epic no doubt but I am not confident he will get the record now.  He needs to average 140 yards/game in these final 3 to get there.  

How did he do against the other NFCE teams when we played them the first time this year?

Against Washington - 146 yards

Against Dallas - 66 yards

Against NY - 176 yards

If he can repeat those performances against Wash and NY and double his output against Dallas then he's got it.  But I do wonder if he will be on the field against NY if we are locked in to the 2 seed (unable to get the 1), which I think is the likely scenario.

Washington know this is a huge game for them and they know to have any chance of winning they have shut Saquon down. Sadly I think they’ll have learnt a lot from that first game and there’s very little chance he’ll go off like that again. I hope I’m wrong though.

Henry made up a lot of ground today … 162 yards rushing against Pittsburgh.  He now trails Barkley by only 52 yards.  

Saquon with 150 yards rushing today.  
268 needed in final 2 games.

I mean that’s very attainable! And if Hurts misses next week then maybe we have to play the starters week 18. That’s not good but the record may be back on.

Above all else, I want to win the Super Bowl. Secondarily, having an Eagle break such a big record would be great. Having him break it against the Giants in the final game of the season would be the sweetest icing on the cake of the regular season. 

I wish he'd have kept going in the first Giants game when he opted to 'let the others eat', but if he breaks it in the final game of the season, that'll be fun... as long as we win the final 2, win the East and if we get the 1 Seed (which is still possible), that'd be the cherry on top. 

But having him break the all time record AGAINST the Giants would be so much fun lol.

The #1 seed was a very slim chance even before this loss. So now its basically zero. I want no parts of the giants game being meaningful. They beat the cowboys it's all but guaranteed they rest the starters for the Giants game. All we need is for them to have to play a team that has nothin to play for and start taking cheap shots at Barkley so he doesn't get the record and he gets hurt. 

Dude is going to be a first ballot Hall of Famer.

Imagine him breaking that record against them followed by another home game that ends Washingtons season..

There's still a possibility, but a good bit has to happen. We win out, Detroit loses twice and Minnesota loses once. Likely that it all happens? Low possibility. But that's what we thought before 44-6 happened, too. So I won't give up the ship until it's completely under water.

Minnesota has to lose to the packers and beat the lions that alone is a tall task. So its not just Minnesota just has to lose one game they have to lose a specific game and win a specific game. I respect the not giving up though, im just not going to waste my energy on it.

Yeah, that's essentially what I said without specifying. Since there's only two games left and Detroit has to lose both, one of them is vs. Minnesota. So the Minnesota loss has to be the only other game left, which is Green Bay.

But trust me, I'm not wasting any energy on it. If we can't get the 1 Seed, and assuming that the Lions and Eagles make it to the NFCCG, I like our chances (if we're full strength, unlike yesterday ). 

Detroit winning in the Divisional round isn't a full on given though, not with their IR situation. So even with the 2 Seed, if we handle our business properly, the NFCCG could still end up at the Linc.

I've heard some 'talking heads' suggest that Barkley breaking the record in 17 games might deserve an asterisk since Dickerson did it in 16 games. Of course, Dickerson's doesn't have an asterisk for doing it in 16 when OJ's 2003 yards happened in only 14 games.

And out of all of them only 3 won a super bowl and only 1 did it the year they rushed over 1,800 yards.

True, but 2 others did go to a Super Bowl (and lost) in their 1800+ season.

Shaun Alexander with the Seahawks in 2005 and Jamal Anderson with the Falcons in 1998 (who lost to Terrell Davis and the Broncos).  

Huge day for Henry yesterday with 147 yards rushing.  He now trails Barkley by only 55 yards (albeit with 1 additional game played since the Eagles haven't played their 16th game yet).

Yeah that’s way too close really! Especially given 1) we hope Barkley only has one game to go and 2) Dallas will likely sell out to shut down the run this week.

After reading Dickerson's statement on the record being broken, I want it to be broken even more now. If not this year by Barkley, then by someone else, just to knock Dickerson off his perch.
