Posted August 5, 20241 yr I tried looking up his stats and I think he played one game last year. Sounds like a camp body
August 5, 20241 yr Sounds like a bit of depth on the 90 man roster to play in some preseason games and see what he can do.
August 5, 20241 yr I think we had a thread for him when he was coming out for the draft. Went to the U iirc

August 6, 20241 yr not sure about the name, he sounds like the villain from a James Bond movie, not an NFL linebacker

August 6, 20241 yr Talking Eagles LB situation i have to focus on Dean. He can blitz and may be decent vs the run but he absolutely has no ability to run with and cover in the passing game. He is 2-3 steps behind everyone he attempts to cover. OCs go after the weakest link when attacking a defense. I think back to just before we drafted him and Howie asked out loud "what am i missing that this guy is still available?” Howie you missed that he can run with and cover anyone. Typical of Howie he will demand we play Dean as he invested a 3rd round pick in him. Hopefully by mid season after he is torched repeatedly in critical situations we will sit him down. Dean can not cover and today’s NFL is a passing league

You're definitely exaggerating. Here's a video of all his snaps in a preseason game last year. He definitely has the ability to cover. If anything, he just needs to be more consistent. That was last year in Desai's defense. We'll see how he's playing in late August in Fangio's defense: Baun may end up being the starter. That's not something I expected when we signed Baun. But he's been doing a good job to date and has had a little more time to work into this defense since Dean wasn't fully cleared in the beginning OTAs. But I absolutely believe in Dean if he plays. I really like smart players and he's smart and athletic. Sometimes I feel that the negative narratives we sometimes hear about a young player are more about people trying to criticize Howie and less about the reality of a young player experiencing the normal ups and downs of football at the NFL level.
August 7, 20241 yr You should look at the regular season snaps of Dean in coverage vs real nfl players. He was consistently beaten badly. Maybe he has learned to recognize earlier and we now have a good dc so that can only help. We’ll see if he can do better…not so much in the pre season against but in the regular season
August 7, 20241 yr His snap counts (% of total defensive snaps played vs % of STs snaps): 2020 — 0% defense, 62% special teams 2021 — 13% defense, 51% special teams 2022 — 2% defense, 67% special teams 2023 — 1% defense, 51% special teams Clearly he's been primarily a STer and likely being looked at as possible help to our STs unit.

Recent third round picks: 2017: Rasul Douglas - never got much of a chance here, certainly wasn't forced into the lineup. Cut after a few seasons and went on to be a pretty damn good player elsewhere. 2018: None. 2019: None. JJ Arcega-Whiteside was a 2nd and he was never forced into the lineup and was cut after a few seasons. Shareef Miller was a 4th and he was cut after a couple seasons. Not even sure he ever dressed for us. 2020: Davion Taylor - Certainly never forced into the lineup and was cut after a few seasons. 2021: Milton Williams - good player so this one is irrelevant. 2022: Dean - Started last year more out of necessity and not having good depth at the position. Trending toward not starting this year if the TC reports are accurate. 2023: Steen & Sydney Brown - Neither started, both saw playing time due to injuries. Steen is a projected starter this year; Brown is not. Yeah, IDK, looking like the "Howie forces 3rd rounders to play" idea seems like it may have been a bit of a stretch.

Concerning Quaterman, dude is a drag down tackler, no thanks. One day the dumb sheets will look for a hitter with size and speed to play LB, it seems like every time one becomes available they pass on him.

Steen is mentioned as a projected starter only because he was an early 3rd round pick. He has never playhed OG, had very few snaps there last camp, few this camp as he's been hurt. In his brief time here he showed quickly he could play left tackle. That is the 2nd most important position in football. If he can't make the switch to OG Howie should take calls on him from other teams as I would imagine he has value since it is rare you can trade for a young left tackle. Could we get a young DT, DE, LB or S for him? I would find out if I were the GM. Whiteside and Taylor are great examples of players on the field only because they were 2nd day picks. Neither ever showed anything and didn't earn their way onto the field but were awarded pt due to their high draft status. I've heard talk that Lurie made the Whiteside pick. Taylor was a laughable choice in the 3rd round. There is no such thing as a developmental LB. Dean can't cover at all. Hopefully he doesn't cost us games this year. He belongs on special teams, short yardage, goal line. Any other time he's on the field, a good OC will target him. Brfown has ability. Hopefully they leave him on PUP till mid or late season until he is better healed. Douglas has ball skills but was not utilized properly here. This list shows how poorly we've drafted recently in round 3. Hopefully the DE this year will be a player

William Thomas (maybe that's before your time) was a DB at Texas A&M, drafted by us in the 4th rd and developed into a Pro Bowl LB. He finished his NFL career with 27 INTs and 37 sacks.

Willie T was great. I go back to 1965. Haven’t missed a weekend of nfl football in 59 years

Taylor had absolutely no ability, no track record. All he had was speed but he had little to no football experience or talent. He was a bust from the moment he was picked and i got such a laugh out of Howie referring to him as a developmental lb. He thought a 3rd round pick was fair value for a fast guy who couldn’t play at all. One of Howie’s worst picks
August 10, 20241 yr Willie Thomas was all Southwest Conference twice at LINE BACKER. He holds the Texas A&M season record for most QB pressures at 30. He is 8th all time in single season sacks and 10 th in career sacks. He was named most valuable player in the 1990 Holiday Bowl. Willie has a great college and pro career and when drafted he was not a developmental lb
August 10, 20241 yr "His coverage has been alarming. Linebackers have to be able to cover in the modern NFL to get on the field. Dean is behind Devin White and Zack Baun in the LB pecking order." - Jimmy Kempski, PhillyVoice This is certainly a frustrating update for Eagles fans. Dean struggled at coverage last season as well, receiving a 49.2 grade on PFF. As good as he is in the run game and the blitz, his lack of improvement at coverage continues to limit his upside as a defender. The former third-round pick out of Georgia has to take a step forward if he wants to be a big part of Vic Fangio's defensive scheme.” https://section215.com/posts/eagles-veteran-on-the-roster-bubble-with-concerning-training-camp-report-01j4s09vr77a Sure doesn’t seem like Dean is that great over guy someone is trying to make him out to be and that’s according to PFF the site that guys loves. 😂

Thomas didn’t develop. He was dominant from the start. Comparing him to Dean is nonsense. What does it matter when he was drafted? Seth Joyner was like an 8th round pick and became a full time starter as a rookie. You’re either good or you’re not.
