Posted August 15, 20241 yr Lots of goings on with our friendly exes on the other side of the ocean. Seems like it should be broken out from the immigration thread. Anyway, despite (or maybe because of) the government’s best, authoritarian, efforts, the temperature seems to be rising.
August 15, 20241 yr Essentially, the UK govt has not addressed the basic issues in play and the temperature has risen over many years. Ultimately, a single event (misunderstood as it was) triggered the release of pent up frustration. The same type of frustration without real open discussion had been occurring in Sweden. Luckily the center left party Social Democrats have seen the light after losing the last election and have started to be more open to real dialog so we may avoid the types of things happening in the UK. I'm happy to discuss the pluses/minuses with a multicultural society as I'm living in one right now. There are very clearly real issues and those can't just be swept under the carpet. Having said that, I'm fundamentally pro-immigration (I'm one myself), the legal kind, but one that is managed in order not to overwhelm a society. I'm also pro-assimilation and putting requirements on immigrants (no, not language), i.e. can't just provide everything for free with nothing in return.
August 15, 20241 yr I saw Gervais popped his head above the parapet. In reality, he's quite left wing (as is JK Rowling), but his desire to be a bit of a contrary dick and state the obvious, trumps the politics. Which is why people who desire an enriched and diverse culture or and dance on the head of a pin around certain issues, dislike him - they can't shut him up. His comedy specials do very well, his live shows do very well. X is continuing to rip apart how contradictory our justice system now. We had a Govt minister posting questionable things, they've apologised and that's the end of the matter. She should be in Jail now judging by.someone questioning with swear words who a political God was, and they are now in prison. 2 illegals stole a £25k watch and were basically let off. Someone raped a teen and was let off because he didn't know the local laws. We have open knife fights in London, people are stopping wearing nice watches in London because it'll get stolen. Our judiciary is a clown show. If you try and discuss these issues, you get the boilerplate statements of you are boob if you question immigration and a phobe if you question why certain religions seems to get a free pass. The last Govt did a very good in sweeping things under the carpet, the new lot are a bunch of professional who have little to no real world experience. We are a Two Tier country, run by someone who is rotten liar, and has such a thin skin, he can't take criticism.
August 15, 20241 yr I'm absolutely not against stopping all immigration, but the impact of it is causing significant issues with housing supply, hospital waiting lists, etc. We simply cannot catch up with all the legal immigration, let alone the illegal immigration. Where I live, the house value has gone 10-15% with very little work being done to it, because the supply is so limited. And that makes it a completely unachievable thing for anyone under 30 to buy unless their family help with a deposit. We've condemned our young to living at home and renting, because its all they can afford. Its wrong. The only way to get control for us to go to net zero immigration and remove any who is here illegally - which we can do now because we are outside of the EU. It will give the country and chance to breath and discuss the issue, but that is reliant on the left not screaming boob or patronising those low income earners who feel the impact of immigration than I would. So it won't happen. I am not stupid or naive. And more than anything, we need a right wing party to provide some ideological balance to the system. Its become all shades of left in the past 5 years, which has only hastened the current issues. Our last election had low turnout in part because there was no choice available.

Was this rotten liar elected by your people?

In part because people were completely fed up of the other lot. So some stayed home, some voted for a populist right wing party or the acceptable centre left party. The Govt got into with less total votes than they did in the last election. 20% of the country voted for this - but the Govt haven't realised that. I'd say that voting for anyone that has been in the legal industry, as leader of a country is bad thing to do. Especially one who has little to no interpersonal skills. You'll get a big ego and someone that can't accept the word no or compromise.

I'd take that banter from other countries, but your current president is a walking corpse who can barely get a sentence out, his Vice President can't stop laughing or saying stuff that sounds like a boomer Facebook meme and the other major candidate is Trump, who almost got assassinated a month ago and everyone just moved on like it didn't happen. The alternative candidate disposed of a dead bear cub in central park, while one VP may have shagged a couch and the other has lied about his time in the National Guard. You've got nothing to crow about at all.🤣

August 16, 20241 yr In the UK, elections for Prime Minister are only 8 weeks long. If the PM loses, he must vacate Downing Street the day after. The amount of money pales in comparison to US elections. In other news, I'd hit it.
