Comparing Starmer to Lenin, Mussolini, and Hitler is simply absurd.

What is being discussed - it's not even adopted policy by Starmer's party yet - is limiting jury trials to more serious crimes.

This isn't being done as some power grab. It's being done because there is a backlog of cases, often leaving accused criminals on the streets for years before trial.

The backlog is very well known, but the right to a jury trial is a long enshrined thing since, I believe, since the Magna Carta. If this was something Labour wanted to do - its a well known issue for years - then this should have been in their manifesto and an issue that the general public could talk about. I certainly do not trust judges over here in some areas; so this is an issue that deserves more discussion than a wave of a pen.

But what a lot of us are finding is they are doing things that weren't included (euthanasia, Chagos, etc) in that manifesto that fundamentally change the core of this country, It feels incredibly dishonest, something I will talk about in the next post

There is an ongoing saga about last weeks budget, the figures and who knew and approved what. The OBR (Office of Budget Responsibility) released some information that contradicted the Govt narrative across Oct and Nov about tax rises, and its all been kicking off.

This dropped on X last night. Its serious stuff

Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves have been accused of misleading the Cabinet by using claims that there was a black hole in the public finances to justify tax rises during the run up to the Budget

One Cabinet minister told The Times: "Why did Keir and Rachel allow the country to believe for so long that we would break our manifesto by putting up income tax by 2p when they would have known that wasn’t true?

'At no point were the Cabinet told about the reality of the OBR forecasts. Had we been told, we might have been in a position to advise against setting hares running on income tax and giving the public the impression we are casual about our manifesto commitments. The handling of this Budget has been a disaster from start to finish'. Another senior minister said: 'The Treasury’s operation is not exactly cutting edge.

The argument about living in uncertain times and needing more headroom makes sense but the way she presented it - by saying there’s a big hole we need to fill - s frustrating. We had this hokey cokey about income taxes going up and then not going up'

Another minister said Starmer and Reeves look 'weak and incompetent' in the wake of the budget but described it as 'par for the course'

The chancellor repeatedly highlighted a downgrade in productivity forecasts in a series of Cabinet meetings as she made the case for raising taxes

It included a meeting on November 4 that was held after a Downing Street press conference which she used to heavily signal that she was preparing to break Labour’s manifesto and raise the basic rate of income tax

Reeves told Cabinet that Britain faces challenges' in the form of tariffs, unstable borrowing costs, inflation and long-term productivity'. She said she "had to respond to the World as it is now, not as she might wish it to be'

Ministers emerged from the meeting convinced that the public finances were in such a dire state that a manifesto-breaking increase in the basic rate of income tax was necessary.

In fact the Office for Budget Responsibility had already informed her privately that the downgrade in the public finances had been more than offset by higher than expected tax revenues

It told Reeves on October 31 that she had a £4.2billion surplus, but the information was not shared with the Cabinet or the public. Only she and Starmer were aware of the improvement in the forecasts. They abandoned the plans to increase the basic rate of income tax a week later amid concerns about a political backlash

It looks our Govt have been very deceitful about the economic forecast, partly via briefings and press conferences in the media,. Some optimistic people suggest its illegally manipulating the bond markets to get a better deal. The person who created the meme knew what they were doing, but if you look at other things (taking the Online Safety Act on - Nadine Dorries is a <bleep>), it does fit a trajectory for Starmer of command and control, He's a quite awful human being.

I would love less Govt. We waste billions each year of tax revenue of pointless crap, borrow too much and have a humongous debt problem as a consequence. If it was up to me, all Govt departments would have huge RIFs until their productivity matches the private sector - take staffing levels down to 2019 levels first, and cut thousands of roles annually in areas such as the Foreign and Home Office to remove the rotten culture and make the whole thing leaner and flexible. The NHS would go and be replaced with a model mirroring France/Germany (but not t American model) as its not fit for purpose. I'd cut all foreign aid, all green crap, ban quangoes (it they have a purpose, they come in-house, if not, gone), benefits to foreigners, etc. It would be vastly unpleasant but this country needs less Govt and less spending in our lives. We have a benefits and free ish culture that disincentivises work.

This is why I hope Reform do well (Farage is largely hopeless BTW, I am no great fan) because they will only tinker around the edges and are the last of a boomer era of politicians/parties who have loyalty to legacy structures. I would blow up the public sector as a concept and not lose a single wink of sleep doing it.

The Govt announced the potential removal of Jury trials, by quoting a fictional case from Charles Dickens . We're not run by intellects or serious people

And further, the jury trial protected someone who dared fight our Govts free speech clampdown and took his case to trial . It may not always get the results I'd want, but at least the jury acts as a counter balance to the judiciary and the evident bias in it.

The anti-corruption minister (Tulip Siddiq), who was sacked because she was under investigation for corruption in Bangladesh, has been sentenced to 2 years in jail in that country.  Because of corruption.

She is unironically complaining about the legality of the prosecution due to the lack of a jury trial and a biased judge. Considering what her party wants to do the in the Yookay and remove juries from some trials.  Both stupid and arrogant.  And she hasn’t been sacked yet either, so is still taking money from the tax payer to sit in parliament. 

Meanwhile, the furore around the budget is not letting up.  Starmer and Reeves are very much protecting themselves as best they can, but its like a leaking ship in the middle of hurricane. The Chancellor is "investigating" who leaked stuff to the press, but let's be honest, they could find a child with chocolate all over its face and claim it didn't touch the chocolate.  This is what we have running us

They also did this, which only highlights the stupidity of the budget. 

Why am I working so hard to pay benefits for polygamous marriages?  Its not a British culture, but a Yookay one. 

 

Oh yeah, and the Govt have again cancelled some elections for "reasons”.  Democracy at work.

The new mayoralties in Greater Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk, Hampshire and the Solent, and Sussex and Brighton will now be contested in 2028.
