He probably did. I know he posted the AJ Brown trade was a terrible one.

My only hesitation is that Jalen hasn't been very good at spreading the ball around in the past. Has he been better at getting through his read progressions to find an open third receiver? I honestly don't know. Admittedly, I've been more spectator than contributor for the last couple of years. My heart still bleeds green, just had a busy couple of years.

I think that was the design of the offense. In 2020, he spread the ball around better than Wentz had all season. In his first full game (vs the Cardinals) here are the receiving stats:

Player Tm Tgt Rec Yds TD 1D YBC YBC/R YAC YAC/R ADOT BrkTkl Rec/Br Drop Drop% Int Rat
Jalen Reagor PHI 8 5 49 0 3 23 4.6 26 5.2 13.0 0   0 0.0 0 79.7
Greg Ward PHI 5 4 15 2 3 13 3.3 2 0.5 5.2 0   0 0.0 0 118.7
Dallas Goedert PHI 8 4 39 0 3 31 7.8 8 2.0 10.3 2 2.0 0 0.0 0 64.1
Quez Watkins PHI 4 3 40 1 2 -6 -2.0 46 15.3 2.8 0   0 0.0 0 145.8
Zach Ertz PHI 7 2 69 0 2 45 22.5 24 12.0 11.1 0   0 0.0 0 68.2
Travis Fulgham PHI 2 2 30 0 2 30 15.0 0 0.0 15.0 0   0 0.0 0 118.7
Alshon Jeffery PHI 3 2 63 0 2 41 20.5 22 11.0 19.7 0   0 0.0 0 109.7
Boston Scott PHI 1 1 7 0   -4 -4.0 11 11.0 -4.0 0   0 0.0 0 95.8
Miles Sanders PHI 2 1 26 0 1 -8 -8.0 34 34.0 -3.5 0   0 0.0 0 95.8

In his first start in 2021, before Steichen revamped the scheme and took over play-calling, here are the receivers:

Player Tm Tgt Rec Yds TD 1D YBC YBC/R YAC YAC/R ADOT BrkTkl Rec/Br Drop Drop% Int Rat
Jalen Reagor PHI 6 6 49 1 2 6 1.0 43 7.2 1.0 0   0 0.0 0 140.3
DeVonta Smith PHI 8 6 71 1 4 54 9.0 17 2.8 7.0 0   0 0.0 0 141.1
Dallas Goedert PHI 5 4 42 1 3 24 6.0 18 4.5 6.8 0   0 0.0 0 141.2
Miles Sanders PHI 5 4 39 0 1 -12 -3.0 51 12.8 -2.0 2 2.0 0 0.0 0 99.2
Quez Watkins PHI 3 3 23 0 2 -7 -2.3 30 10.0 -2.3 0   0 0.0 0 98.6
Zach Ertz PHI 2 2 34 0 1 31 15.5 3 1.5 15.5 0   0 0.0 0 118.7
Kenneth Gainwell PHI 3 2 6 0 0 -4 -2.0 10 5.0 -1.0 0   0 0.0 0 70.1

I think Hurts can spread the ball around just fine. There was a point in 2021 where the offense was sputtering a bit and Steichen redesigned it around Hurts' strengths and we had success. Now that Jalen is an experienced vet, I think he can thrive with additional elements added to the passing game. Last season, I just think Brian Johnson was in over his head and was afraid to add anything new to the offense we had success with in 2022.

He was in a horrible situation in DC, is a poor fit as for as skill set for the system they want to run, plus he was disgruntled. It’s not like the kid can’t play — he showed some good flashes in DC.

But let me give you another perspective — "expected value.” A third round pick has about a 25% chance to become a starter, and a rookie contract is 4 years long. So the "expected value” of a 3rd round pick is 1 year of a starting caliber player.

Well, Dotson has proven he can be a competent, if unspectacular, starter. And we have him locked up for 2 years on cheap rookie money, PLUS we have a team option for a 3rd season.

This is a spectacularly good trade just by looking at the math of it and what each team would project to get. We got DOUBLE the expected value of our third round pick, PLUS a team option on a third year, PLUS a 5th round pick.

And that’s not even using the "time value” of draft picks which is generally a full round lower for every year in the future. If you apply that discount, it’s even better.

As I analyze this trade from a purely statistical perspective, it might be one of the best deals Howie has ever done from a pure risk/reward perspective. Which is really saying something.

Now obviously Dotson may be a total flop, but just looking at this dispassionately from a math perspective it’s a massive, massive win.

I like Dotson. He was spectacular in year 1 considering QB and in a horrible position in year 2. Heard a lot of his coaches and players talking about him. Nothing but good vibes. Good kid. Everyone players wished him nothing but the best and coaches loved him. With the pressure off and decent QB, Dotson may become the best WR3 in the NFL. He has that quickness that a slot WR needs. Almost no risk move by the Eagles, and they have 3 years not 2 at rookie salary. This is a steal by Howie. If he can pool the same move for defense…Life is beautiful.

I am hearing Dotson actually lined up outside more than the slot on the Commanders. But the new Washington coaches were giving him more looks in the slot position. So I am unsure if Dotson projects directly into the slot position on the Eagles. His size, speed, and ability comps something like Devonta Smith; though Dotson never lived up to the hype. He joins the team at the end of camp. I think the best approach is package Dotson into some plays until he learns the playbook. He might be something like Julio Jones last year where they could sneak Smith into slot on 3 WR sets and Dotson goes outside. Or not. Or they alternate... Either way it gives Kellen Moore yet another weapon to play with in the offense scheme.

Washington does not have a legit QB. This is why Dotson was complaining. He was not going anywhere in Washington. But in Philly he can revamp his career and have some major production. I expect him to be a 500 yards receiver this season.

Justin Jefferson ran a 4.43 at the combine. He seems to be doing well with that pedestrian speed.

I've yet to see Jefferson play, I'll let you know what I think of him after watching him play.

Moreover, having the ball forced to you (576 targets in 4 years, 392 receptions) can make a WR seem better than he is.

Anyone complaining about this is either not very bright, or just chooses to be negative for the sake of being negative.

-As far as compensation, two 7th round picks are garbage. They gave up a 3rd for Dotson and a 5th. They already had two 3's and even AFTER the deal they have a 1, 2, 3, and FOUR 5's. So as far as compensation goes they didn't give up much and they still have a solid set of picks for 2025.

Apparently you don't value 3rd round picks as I do, I'm not a fan of trading picks for players (especially rounds 1, 2, and 3), you're mortgaging your future when you do.

2 years plus a 3rd year option. The third year is at a higher cap number that I’m not sure we would be willing to pay, but it’s just more optionality for the eagles with zero downside.

Agreed on his play — I have to think a better situation in Philly gets him back to his rookie level of play. He might not have crazy numbers because we have so many weapons, but I think his efficiency and overall level of play will get back on track.

Desperate? It feels like we're all-in and realize that we don't have enough elite talent on Defense. We can't fix the defense in a year. But we can't put the finishing touches on the offense. We need to score 28 each week to have a chance of getting back to the dance.

Believe me when I tell you, getting back to the dance is going to depend on the defense, not the offense.

Everybody want to give Mahomes the credit for KC's success but anyone who's knows the game is well aware that KC's defense is every bit as responsible for their success, it's their defense that keeps putting the ball back in Mahome's hands.  Think about the Eagles/Cheifs SB, it was KC's defense that won that game and the Eagles defense that lost it.

Any pick ups made should have been on the defensive side of the ball, the Eagles were fine at the WR position without adding Dotson, he wasn't needed, and what did the dumbsheet do, give up a 3rd for something that wasn't needed........and all Eagles fans shout, Go Howie Go!!!  I guess that makes you guys dumbsheets also.

Here's a conspiracy I heard:

Someone told you that you're a jelly bean so you started calling yourself JellyBeanJoe, when they asked you what flavor you were you replied licorice.

Is there any truth to that?

No I hate licorice. I’m definitely cherry flavored.

Once again, you believe in bad information.

Imagine a WR that averages 6.5 receptions, 96 yards, and 0.5 TDs per game in his 4 year career, being an All Pro in every season he wasn't hurt ... seeming better than he really is. There have been so many guys in NFL history that can say the same thing, I guess ...

They didn't really keep track of targets in the beginning of Jerry Rice's career, but he had 619 targets in the first 4 seasons where that stat was tracked. Cris Carter ran a 4.7 forty and according to Bill Walsh, Jerry Rice never clocked under 4.6. Both guys went on to have HOF careers despite their forty times.

I just don't understand how you have never seen Jefferson play. He's played the Eagles twice including last season. This is how I know you don't watch much football.

The reservations as to why WASTEAM was willing to trade him...within the division...are valid.  It's not often you see a "good" player be traded to another team in the same division (maybe Hockenson from DET to Minny?  Who else?)

The Dolphins traded Wes Walker to the Patriots and probably regretted it for a decade.

Jason Peters was a great return for a 1st.

AJ Brown was also a great return for a 1st.

I agree with that premise somewhat.....however, when a GM like Roseman stockpiles draft picks the way he does, he puts himself into position to be able to trade a 3rd for a guy like Dotson.

It's one of those things that Roseman does so well.  They still have 7 picks next year with a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and (3) 5th round picks.  So he not only strengthened the WR corps, he hasn't mortgaged any future by getting a 5th back for 2 7th rounders.  And he's been doing it for years.

That's if Jalen can see beyond #11 & #6

Excellent trade. I hope they drew up some 3 WR plays. That would be fun.

Howie Gansta.jpeg

The odds of drafting a WR in the 3rd round that will have a material impact aren't that good.  That's why I like the trade.  This guy has demonstrated he can play in the NFL.

But why would Washington make this trade in the first place?   That's the concern I have.

Jalen will take whatever opposing defense gives him. Having said that. What team has 3 CBs that can cover our trio of WRs consistently??? None! And Goddert? And Barkley if he is receiving? It is a mismatch in our favor. If the offensive line does its job and picks up the blitz.. we will keep moving the chains and scoring.
I am only praying for Hurts's health.

Defense is a mystery..but should be better than last year. Too many unknowns yet on D. Need time to jell.

Dotson did not play yesterday, right?  Did not see his name on gamebook.  Not enough knowledge of the system to put him out there?

They still have a 3rd round pick in 2025 and since Howie is a master at manipulating the draft they turned a 4 this year into the 3 next year that they traded for Dotson. They essentially traded a 4 this year for a 5 next year and Dotson, unless you care about two 7th round picks which would be silly. They weren't getting a WR anywhere near as good as Dotson for the next two years with a 4th this offseason and the window is open now. There are a lot of people who overvalue draft picks, perhaps you are one of them.
