Posted September 7, 20241 yr Wasn't always pretty but we showed up in tricky conditions against a good team and got the week one win. That has peril written all over it - opponent on the rise with a star QB, overseas, Friday night, slippery field - and they got the job done. Some excellent performances, too. Barkley, obviously. Smitty with the most reliable hands in the game. Blank played really well, as did Baun. Quinyon Mitchell looks born to do it. It's 7am here in Spain, but I'm a happy man

September 7, 20241 yr looked good once the rust was shaken off. Offense obviously looked like crap early with those 2 turnovers, but glad they bounced back. A few things need to be tightened up on defense as well. I don't know if it's just the way the league is now, or if it's just been a chronic Philly issue these past few years but some of the tackling efforts are just hideous. Of course this is me judging from my living room.
September 7, 20241 yr Considering all of the factors in this game I’ll take the outcome. You can see this team has a chance to really go places, but you can also see that they could make this a long season for themselves if they continue to lose the turnover battle.
September 7, 20241 yr Happy for the win, but I’ve seen enough of Jalen to know he’s regressed. He had the one big scramble late, but even his running doesn’t seem as explosive as 2022. We thought maybe it was an injury last year, but to me it seems the league caught up with him.

Given all the factors I think we have to just say a job well done. After the way we fell apart last year I think we needed a W so badly. Factor in being on the road (effectively), it being week one and against a good NFC opponent and I think it’s a good W. Some good, some bad and some areas for concern but 1-0 and we can enjoy 7 hours of football tomorrow 😊.
September 7, 20241 yr These are supposed to be two of the best teams in the NFC. Packers looked every bit as sloppy as the Eagles (actually more sloppy). HUGE WIN because this could be a tie-breaker win againts the Packers for a playoff spot or first round bye.
September 7, 20241 yr Always happy for a W … regardless of how they come. But it would be best for the blood pressure if they can clean up some of those issues and minimize the mistakes.

There's nothing like this board for telling you all the reasons you shouldn't be happy with a win

You know some people will say that many of the wins last season looked a lot like this game too. These heart attack games where they dig themselves a hole they need to climb out of. I’m trying to give them the benefit of doubt here. It was a tall task that frankly both teams and both quarterbacks struggled in their own ways. If I see this kind of performance at home against the Falcons even in a win I’m concerned. Remember at some point last season they were 10-1.
September 7, 20241 yr Author I think it's important to think of the context. Week one. Long journey to a foreign country. Odd night to play. Awful field. Good opponent. Rusty players. Rusty coaches. Terrible start. But we won. It's not like we were playing the Panthers mid season at home. This was a test against a playoff team and with a ton of variables at play. It's pretty churlish to overlook all that. There's room for improvement and sharpening up. But also a lot of reasons to be cheerful.

There were guys running wide open, big chunk plays and plays down the field plus some of those play designs were nothing like last year. Hurts needs to clean it up but this offense is already light years better. Defense is hard to say because the field was a disaster but, they showed some promise and should get better.

I agree from what I saw it’s different especially with the motion. I can only assume things will get more complex as Jalen gets more comfortable in the system, but that DNA from last season is still there. Remember when reporters were telling us there were a miserable 9 win team? I’d like to see that overtake and proof last season is out the system. Maybe Barkley is the spark this team needs to keep them churning.

Barkley is ridiculous I hate Penn State and the Giants but, I always liked Barkley he is a good kid and a special talent

Agreed and that’s why a win is great given the circumstances and it being week one… But it looked a lot like our wins last year and that’s why there’s some reason to be cautious and wary. Early weeks of the year it’s all about getting the W but it’s one to watch.

They need to amass the wins while they can and however they can, but I sure wouldn’t mind seeing a few convincing blowouts along the way.

September 8, 20241 yr They beat a good team, overcame the turn over deficit, disrupted a good offense and came out with the win. Green Bay is a good play off team. The 49'ers and Lions are the consensus top NFC teams but Philly and Green Bay are 3 and 4 in most reasonable, non-homer, power rankings. Most power rankings have the Eagles in the 5-7 range and the Packers in the 7-10 range overall. With some analysts picking them for the super bowl. The Green Bay coach said it best, when you are +2 in the turn over battle you win 90% of the time. When you are a good team like Green Bay that's probably closer to 97% of the time. This was a pretty stout offense and they managed to disrupt it and cause bad throws and bad decisions. The defense, while not the same as the 2017 defense reminds me a lot of them in the way they disrupt, downright thump people and play fast. They got some stuff to clean up and some work to do but I'm pretty happy with where they are and where they are headed. They were missing three key things last year. We weren't able to control the clock, we relied to much on Jalen to carry the team and we didn't have a good OC. You have to be able to control the flow of the game. Having an elite back like Barkley will help burn a lot of late game clock and preserve leads. Last year, Jalen had to play at a high level every drive for us to be successful. Enter Barkley, who can help carry the load. Jalen won't need to be the hero every single drive and can reserve it for the drives that matter. Finally, I saw a play where we had a receiver running free. Oh, free running receiver, how I missed thee. It's so nice to have a real offensive mind calling the plays. Creating mismatches and confounding a defense. I guess it's not bad to put up 34 points, win a game and be -2 in the turnover battle. tldr; We got the tools to make a good run and do some damage. tldr+; Our elite receivers were hand cuffed by a bad scheme last year. They are going to have a feeding frenzy under the new OC.

In fact I’d consider the Packers a good football team and this a good win especially considering how bad those conditions were to not come out with any significant injuries. Atlanta just lost to the Steelers 18-10. The Eagles have a long resting period, and they’re at home. I’m not looking for a nail biting win against that team considering everything.

Oh sorry bud I misunderstood you! Yeah next week I think should be an opportunity for us to go out and show what we are. If it’s close next week and we struggle? Then I think that’s the kind of team we are going to be this year.

If they go through another season like they did the previous season I’m not expecting new results. For whatever the reason they couldn’t just grind down a game like they did against the Packer (though they almost blew that too with a late fumble) and far too often left too much time on the clock giving their opponents a chance to tie or win. Maybe Barkley is the game changer that allows them to seal out games. Still comes down to turnovers in my opinion though. Hurts just can’t keep being to lose with the football.
