I'm watching DEs that are lined out too wide and too far away from the QB who don't rush aggressively as they have told to protect the edge.

If they have been told to protect the edge then not only are they not getting to the QB but they are also not doing what they have been asked.

Agreed. They are super soft on the edges.

They may not be able to play in this scheme anyway but Huff and Smith look confused about what it is they are supposed to do.  They have that frozen in the headlights look to their play.  They passively attack the OT and in this league that won't be effective.  Sweat is also lining up way outside.  Hard to get to the QB when you are so wide and don't have the power to bull rush.  We need much bigger DEs but Howie has always been partial to little guys for some reason.  The Saints are gonna run the ball down our throats

The saints are going to do what they want to this defense. They’ll run it when they want and they’ll pass it when they want. Kamara is going to have a field day over the middle and Hill is going to run over our guys for fun.

Did you see when Cooper DeJean came in? I’m not sure how I would describe it; confused, overwhelmed. His body language was just like "please don’t throw it at me”. He definitely didn’t have the look of confidence,

Yeah, I prefer the old school guys like Buddy Ryan, Bud Carson & Jim Johnson. Heck, Spags has had an incredible career as a DC and he was a Johnson disciple. I can bear to watch this soft zone, bend but don’t break scheme. That’s not how we play D in Philly.

Spags had the Chiefs as a better defensive team than offensive last season. Pressure wrecks offenses. Sitting back and providing no pressure will allow mediocre quarterbacks to complete 80-90% of their passes against a team. These guys don’t blitz, but their extra guy in coverage doesn’t help because the quarterback has all day to throw. Time kills man and zone. No one can cover that long. The only reason this worked was because the Eagles got pressure with 4. When they can’t it doesn’t work. That’s when a great defensive mind needs to adapt. Instead these guys just keep doing the same crap and that’s how they let teams walk down the field and score on them.

That was football ignorant Lurie's pick.

Nobody is talking about 50% of the D line- Carter and Davis. They BOTH suck. This is why the D looks like last years so far- because 50% of it IS last years line. They just never show up, collect a paycheck, rinse and repeat.

"It's the field conditions!"

"It's not them. It's Fangio's scheme!"

"They're getting double teamed!"

"They've shown flashes here and there. Remember last season when Jordan Davis chased down Josh Allen?!"

"They still have potential!"

"Howie nailed the draft!"

Did I miss anything?

As long as the offense is explosive, and the D makes some key stops, they're fine. They won't get away with it in the playoffs.

Playoffs ? ?

If the team does the smart thing and play it safe when its ahead inside the 10 with 3rd and short and just runs the ball with less than 2 minutes to go and no timeouts for Atlanta, the D doesn't get put in that position to begin with.

Fangio's two high safeties held Atlanta to 15 points.  It truly was an effective bend but don't break D for most of the game.

Don't kid yourself - the lack of success stopping the run was probably more on the DE's and scheme.  When you have two safeties playing deep center field, it invites the run.  If you check the rest of the NFL, you'll see that there is a marked increase in rushing yards and decrease in passing td's precisely because of this.

I expected more, but right now the only guys who look like they’re trying are Williams, Graham, and that guy Booker.

That was an amazing game from the D. They need to back it up next week vs the Bucs

FWIW - going back to that Falcon game, the all time great Eagles 1991 defense lost a game in similar fashion against the Bucs.  Two minute offense is just different.

Credit to the defense for stepping up.

If it takes a loss against Atlanta to make them play like that I’ll take it.

let’s hope that we continue like that and don’t be less aggressive against the bucs

The 5 man front needs to become a staple on early downs the rest of the season. Made it impossible to double team Davis and Carter and Davis actually started to resemble a decent defensive lineman

Yep, 100%

It does yeah but teams will work that out eventually and start to exploit our lack of coverage options. The 5 man fronts help for sure but they need to learn to win as a front 4.

This is was the best defensive game ive seen the Eagles play since i cant remember when....

Yep Id agree with that. They stuffed the run and they got after Carr. It was so impressive how they responded to the problems we’ve seen for not just two weeks but dating back to last year.

I get it, 2 of the 3 games were against crappy teams,  it that is still impressive.  The "real test” will come after this week with that stretch against Dallas, Washington, LA, and Baltimore.
