November 12, 2024Nov 12 I want to see how they do against this tougher stretch against Washington, LA, Baltimore but Defense rankings so far: dramatic improvement in pass defense, fewest 1st downs and points allowed 2nd in total yards (last year 26th) 5th in points allowed (last year 30th) 2nd in pass defense (last year 31st) 5th in rush defense (last year 10th) 8th in fumble recovery (last year 21st) 15th in total takeaways (gotta catch those INT opportunities, last year 25th) Check this out: 1st in fewest 1st downs by opponent (last year 29th) https://www.pro-football-reference.com/years/2024/opp.htm

And the turnovers are starting to come too. I’m sure early in the year we were right near the bottom of the league because we were not forcing many turnovers but since the bye that’s been all change. Over the next few weeks, as you say, we will see whether this defense can stand up to some of the better offenses.

Burrow has been lights out the past few weeks and we kept him and Chase in check.
November 13, 2024Nov 13 Some of it is scheme, but so much of the improvement - in my opinion at least, and that´s an opinion I respect - comes from two key changes. Firstly, Zack Baun is an absolutely brilliant fit for this team, he´s all over the place and is bringing out the potential in Nakobe Dean. Those two in tandem form a brilliant unit and seem to be a perfect complement for each other. Howie, pay the man. Do it today. Secondly, despite their inexperience, Mitchell and De Jean have been tremendous. Having those two in the backfield providing such good coverage really opens things up front for the pressure. That extra second or so the QB has to hold the ball is crucial. I´d love to see the stats on how long opposing QBs have to hold the ball this year before throwing compared to last year. I bet the number of quick throws has really fallen away.

I don't have a stat to back it up, but I was paying attention to "time to throw" by opposing QBs against us for the first 6 or 7 games and for the most part quick passes were the game plan. We've been able to get pressure sometimes and obviously the coverage is better overall. I don't think the quick throws against us have dropped in frequency. But I do believe our defense has forced the completion percentage against us to drop significantly compared to last season. (5% lower than last season).
November 13, 2024Nov 13 I think that sounds reasonable enough. I don´t think I explained it very well, but what I meant was when the coverage is good it takes longer for plays to develop and for receivers to find time to get anywhere near open

Especially the open field tackling.

We were running about 65% last year, 62% earlier in the year and a little over 60%. Good for 4th in the league. I don't know the validity of this site. https://www.teamrankings.com/nfl/stat/opponent-completion-pct
November 13, 2024Nov 13 Opposing offenses are 173/285 so that's pretty close. (60.7%) The stat that may tell more of a tale is the yards per pass attempt. 5.5yds/att on the season 4.4 in last 3 games from the same site. 6.7 last year. https://www.teamrankings.com/nfl/stat/opponent-yards-per-pass-attempt?date=2024-11-14

Fangio's defensive philosophy depends on good tackling to be successful.

They knew it was going there and they couldn't stop it? Way too easy

And 2) Fangio when the game is on the line. There’s probably going to be a play off game where we need a stop with the clock running out and I’m not sure we can trust Fangio to get it right.

At the end I kind of expected a letdown. To go from the emotional high of the pick thinking it was over to having to go right back out there isn't an easy emotional swing. No excuse though. The entire 4th quarter they seemed to get shredded. Is that a matchup issue, do they have the Eagles D figured out, or just fatigue from being on the field so much?

Oh as soon as DeVonta dropped that pass I knew. We’d let Washington stay in the game all day. We’d let them keep it close and with an opportunity to effectively end the game we dropped it. At that point it was inevitable. I think giving up 36 points to an offense that we turned over 5 times is actually a real worry! We likely have to play them in the play offs and that game is now going to be a concerning one. We are absolutely better than them but still.,,

They werent on the field that much. Washington had the ball for ~24mins total. The D executed poorly. Some bad tackling and some coverage busts and some pass rushes / blitzes that didnt contain Daniels. I 100% doubt that execution is way its called / coached. One weakness I do see on Fangio's D is how it is against up tempo. Tempo forces teams to align quickly and simplify coverage / packages. I wonder if they are able to do their coverage disguises as well when playing against tempo. Tempo also forces rushers to have less rest etc. CJGJ being out didnt help. Their backup safety / dime looks are bad.
December 23, 2024Dec 23 Gave up 22 points in the 4th quarter. IN ONE QUARTER. Horrible D today. And we've got to go against this young dynamic QB 2x a year for like the next 7 years or so. Yay.

Hopefully he has that year two regression… CJ Stroud had it and as a rookie I thought he looked even better than Daniel has.

I wouldn’t worry, they had a bad quarter of football with a backup QB on offense. The game would’ve been a blowout if Hurts didn’t get injured.

It got a lot worse in the 4th quarter but I’m not sure I’d say it was good up to that point.
December 23, 2024Dec 23 Letting the Commanders go down the field that quickly to win the game at the end is the kinda crap that they did a lot last season. Hope this was a one-off.
