Posted September 19, 20241 yr So I got up this morning and thought about the Eagles second drive where they didn't take the 3 points and I thought to myself, that dumbarse decision had to have come from the analytic arseholes. I'm catching up on yesterday's National Football Show and heard that Nick consulted with the analytic jerks as to what they should do on the late game 3rd and 3, and they came up with the pass. I don't want to get into detailing all of the factors involved but both decisions failed to factor in momentum swings and the quality of both defenses and offenses. Bottom line, if you need to consult with the analytic know-nothings you have no business being a head football coach. As long as the FO supports critical decisions to be made by the children in analytics expect ill advised decisions that cost the team wins time after time. The team is pathetic on several decision making fronts, Howie has no business deciding who's drafted, who makes the team, and who starts. Likewise, the analytic department surely has no business giving their input on play selection while the game is in progress. If this season turns out to be a big disappointment the best thing the organization can do is to hire a quality head coach and let him bring in his staff and get the F out of his way....and keep the analytic jackarses home during the games.... with no cell phones!! .
September 19, 20241 yr The coach is responsible for the call. The analytics don't know how the team is executing, how the defense is defending or the specific play call. It's always been up to the coach to take in all the information and be responsible for the decision. Analytics is always going to say the game is better off if you make a first down or you have a better chance to win if you convert on a 4th and whatever past your own 40. tldr; As the coach, you own everything. No matter what, you are responsible for it.
September 19, 20241 yr Nick's been all over the place with this. He was inconsistent with the analytics driven calls, and it cost the team the game.
September 19, 20241 yr Analytics should be used as Salt. Great in a little quantity, and disastrous in a large quantity.
September 19, 20241 yr Nick isnt consulting with the analytics dept. he takes orders from them. Nick was hired as head coach to follow commands from Jeff Lurie thru his son Julian Lurie who heads up the analytics dept. that is why experienced coaches werent interested and werent offered the job. each week Nick receives directives from the analytics dept that he forwards on to the dc and oc. Lurie is a fan of the bend but dont break defense we have played for years and directs the team to follow this philosophy. This is not new. It has been going on for a few years maybe longer. Problem is the correct strategy is to kick the fg early and go for it late. Nick and Julian got that wrong. The whole thing is a mess. Howie cant draft and the time it falls apart is now. Nick will be fired maybe before the season ends but the d is almost completely lacking in talent and Howie cant draft well to fix it. Another factor is we have spent was more future dollars than any other team. Howie has spent more than a full seasons salary cap, close to 300 mil. We are at the point we need to shed salary and acquire lots of draft picks to get young cheap talent while we begin to pay down our debt. When we are 3-6 at the trade deadline i would expect Slay and others high salaried vets to be dealt if we can get mid round picks for them. The need to rebuild will soon be readily apparent to all. Thank God we won the SB.
September 19, 20241 yr It just makes no sense other then the rumor mills that the nfl is scripted. you have 4th and 3 at the 10 yard line a first down or touchdown and the game is over but you chose a fg… even if you fail on forth down now Atlanta has to go 90 yards to score the game winning td vs the 70 under the new kickoff rules or they get in field goal range and tie the game and we head to overtime. forcing a team to score a td to win has a much better rate if your up 8 not 6 Not to mention that lame excuse for not running one third down "they were muddying up the middle” guess he forgot about run plays to the outside like a toss or sweep or even qb option.
September 20, 20241 yr Hate to say it, but this is nothing new. They were doing it to Doug as well. The analytic guys are on the headsets as well. This is the Eagles trying to be cutting edge. This is why they have been so obsessed with this bend don’t break style defense since Reid left. It’s all driven by analytics. I see how this works in baseball, but this stuff should never be taken this literal in a sport like football, because there are just far too many variables. The coach has to go with his gut and feel the flow of the game. Having some valuable information is fine, but the analytics department should not be making in game decisions. Might as well make a puppet the head coach. Oh wait….
September 20, 20241 yr It's never going to change. It comes from FO down, they specifically are hiring people who will accept their analytics, unless they get someone specifically who has the credibility to deny it, like if they had BB. Only chance is lucking our way into an elite coach who tells them to F off and then proves their philosophy. We've been analytics driven since Chip Kelly.

Early in the game, they went for it on 4th and short instead of kicking an easy FG. Late in the game, if they convert 4th down the game is over. Instead they took the FG. It doesn’t make sense. Why go for it the first time, but not the next time?
September 20, 20241 yr Analytics are only there to provide data on general trends about what is likely to be the best option in any given situation. Analytics only look at data. OP is right that they don´t take into account game flow, momentum etc. Data doesn´t have feelings or perception. It´s only a tool. It´s good to use it as a part of an informed decision making process. It´s unwise to follow all of its recommendations. In this case, the early decision to go for it instead of taking the points was wrong. The decision to call the option pass to Barkley was right (in my opinion - we don´t need to have that conversation again). Regardless, analytics have already changed the game. Aikman was talking about this in his co-commentary the other night. Back in his day teams would hardly ever go for it on 4th down, and certainly not in the minus side of the field. Now, we see it all the time. That´s just one example. Like it or not, the use of analytics isn´t going anywhere. It´s up to coaches to use it intelligently, rather than blindly.
September 20, 20241 yr Analytics is fine when used properly. If it is used to help inform a decision then fine but it shouldn’t make the decision. Sirianni and his coaches need to take in to account the flow of the game, the situation, the options they have. Analytics can’t tell them that late in the game when you have a chance to kill the game you go super aggressive. It can’t tell you what play to dial up or what play you have in your playbook to dial up. I also think Sirianni lost a lot of credit for being aggressive early and then bottling it late in the game. I think he lost credit with us as fans but he may have done with his players too. We don’t know that but I’d imagine his offensive players will now have some doubt next time he asks them to go for it on 4th down.
September 20, 20241 yr Who the hell cares, analytics or no analytics, Saints are trashing the Eagles this week, after that the road to NOT making the playoffs will be all set and ready.. Fly Eagles Fly...
