So I looked at the decimated WR position and decided to look for available free agents and saw no one there work bringing in.

Then I decided to look at the practice squad and came across Danny Gray, dude seems to be a bona fide playmaker but there seems to be a problem, Howie didn't draft him, the 9ers did.

Does Howie have too much ego to acknowledge the 9ers drafted a player that's as good as most WRs on his roster.....I think so, it makes no sense to have that kind of talent on your practice squad behind inferior WRs on the 53 man roster.

I'll say this much, if you don't have enough sense to put you best players on the field you don't deserve to win..

He always has some random practice squad scrub he obsesses over, claims that Howie sucks because he doesn't make him a starter or major contributor...meanwhile critical of some of our best players like DeVonta Smith.

OP is right.  AJ Brown actually isn't injured. Howie just doesn't want to play him because he didn't draft him.

Yeah, Howie might be insecure about playing a guy the niners were brilliant enough to draft but then cut two years later. High level analysis and reasoning, as usual.

It's been a couple of days and I'm still grappling with the idea that by signing Gray and having him turn into a good receiver here, Howie would somehow look worse than the GM who picked him in the third round, got literally 0 production out of him, and released him after two seasons. I mean are there even enough  or  to cover it?

This dude is so good that 31 other teams don’t want him on their active roster either. Anyone else could sign him at any time. I guess every team in the league just refuses to play guys drafted by the Niners…

I see this argument a lot, but it's not entirely accurate. Not all teams have the same needs at certain positions and some of the depth players at positions are also special teams contributors, making replacing them with a player that is perhaps a better prospect at a skill position, not feasible. All teams are keeping track of all the other teams' PS players because they can be plucked at anytime.

Specifically with Gray, the issue in college and in his short stint with the whiners (including practice) has been drops. Physically and athletically, he has desirable traits for the position. The part that is holding him back is the mental (focus). Spending a couple seasons on various team' practice squads could help him improve there. But he won't be playing anytime soon unless something happens like it did in 2020 for Fulgham and the team has no choice but to put him in and hope for the best.

If he was as good as most receivers on the roster (as OP foolishly claimed), some team would have picked him up.

Obviously ... consider the source.

I'm just saying that teams see him as a project, not some immediate contributor. In a way, he's kind of like Jalen Reagor at this point. He has the tools, but not necessarily the mindset to be great. 

If Gray can show enough to stay on our PS all season and through the offseason (signing a futures contract), perhaps he gains something from watching Brown and Smith, while working on the little things to get better.
