It's October 1 and the longshoreman are on strike.  If this isn't resolved soon, we could be facing a disaster of Covid like proportions or worse.  Please, err on the side of caution and stock up on food, drinks and supplies.   It can't hurt because the price of everything, to the extent available, will skyrocket.  Better safe than sorry.  Be safe and prudent everybody!

This being campaign season, the administration will quickly bend over and give the union every ridiculous demand that they want, then shower Kommie with adulation for her ruthless negotiating skills.

Another one for the every accusation is a confession file.

I don't know about that.  The time to bend over was before the strike.  A more competent administration would have gotten this resolved.  But hey, since Kamala advised us that there are no servicemen overseas, Biden can always invoke the Taft-Hartley Act, and if necessary, use members of the military service to man our ports, right?

Another dropped ball by this inept administration. Pothole Pete nowhere to be found.

It will be resolved in about a week. The gap is closing. The big fight is on automation, and the unions are trying to prevent the companies from using technology to increase efficiency and compete. Proving yet again that unions are useless and destructive in 21st century America.

The automation demands are absurd.

The Teamsters are thumbing their noses at the administration now too. At some point, a part of me wants to see how they'll react after they help get Trump elected just so that he can hang them out to dry. The rank and file will get shafted but they keep electing corrupt union leadership just the same so it's apparently the only thing they know how to do. I'll be fine either way, but if they want Trump in power then F 'em, let's see how they like it when the leopard eats their face too.

Uhhh, wtf? This isn't a strike, it's a shakedown that would make the five familes blush.

The ILA is asking for a $5-an-hour raise for each of the six years of the new contract, which means the hourly rate could reach $69 by 2030, a 77% raise. The union is also asking for better benefits and is opposing the use of automated technologies at ports.

"Oh noes, the companies are leveraging technology to improve efficiency? Guess it's time we wait until a month before the election to throw a temper tantrum and demand they give us a 77% raise!"

Seriously though, this kind of ish makes me hate everything about unions and reinforces every stereotype to date. I forget who said the quote but if we need to "protect" all these jobs so badly, then let's sign a mandate to replace all the shovels in the country with spoons. Problem solved!

Yup. Time to break it and replace them all

bingo.

unions, making america pay more for things.

Here's my idea -- all the ports should fire the longshoremen and replace them with migrants. Liberals won't know what to do.

In all seriousness -- unions outlived their usefulness 50 years ago. It's time for them to go away. All the reasons they were formed (worker safety, benefits, etc.) are now codified into law. No company should be forced to have union labor.

Good move.  Regardless of who is wrong here, the general public looks to get screwed.

Has everybody else forgotten those empty shelves during Covid?

Agreed. It’s one thing if you’re a coal miner who only sees daylight on Sundays. It’s another when you’re making doctor money to move a joystick. Plus they’re so corrupt with how they fake hours.

If I were Biden I’d move the military in to take it over and work it and give the companies a green light on automation.

Yeah - screw this guy and his request for a 77% raise and no automation.

Sounds like he's watched too many Scorsese movies.

Oh FFS, apparently that literally is his problem.

The decision to strike is largely in the hands of the mercurial and tough-as-nails head of the dockworkers union, Harold Daggett, a native New Yorker who’s been accused of having mob ties.

Harold Daggett isn’t afraid of a fight.

The union leader has twice won cases against the US Justice Department over alleged Mafia ties.
