October 4, 20241 yr Just now, Dave Moss said: She should be president I heard she walked in the negotiating room with steel-heeled stilettos on and said "sign it, ****” and Trump’s gangster union boss buddy sheet in his pants. Can’t confirm it but that’s what a lot of people are saying.
October 4, 20241 yr In all seriousness this is a solid win by Mayor Pete. He's going to be the candidate one year.

A 62% increase in salary over 6 years is insane. Not to mention the significant increase in employee contributions to retirement accounts that will be coming plus protection from automation.
October 4, 20241 yr Joe Biden the most Pro Union President in U.S. History. Dockworkers' union to suspend strike until Jan. 15 to allow time to negotiate new contract A person briefed on the agreement said the ports sweetened their wage offer from about 50% over six years to 62%. The person didn’t want to be identified because the agreement is tentative. Any wage increase would have to be approved by union members as part of the ratification of a final contract. The union went on strike early Tuesday after its contract expired in a dispute over pay and the automation of tasks at 36 ports stretching from Maine to Texas. The strike came at the peak of the holiday shopping season at the ports, which handle about half the cargo from ships coming into and out of the United States. The walkout raised the risk of shortages of goods on store shelves if it lasted more than a few weeks. Most retailers, though, had stocked up or shipped items early in anticipation of the dockworkers' strike. "With the grace of God, and the goodwill of neighbors, it’s gonna hold,” President Joe Biden told reporters Thursday night after the agreement. In a statement later, Biden applauded both sides "for acting patriotically to reopen our ports and ensure the availability of critical supplies for Hurricane Helene recovery and rebuilding.” Biden said that collective bargaining is "critical to building a stronger economy from the middle out and the bottom up.” The union's membership won't need to vote on the temporary suspension of the strike, meaning that giant cranes should start loading and unloading shipping containers Thursday night. Until Jan. 15, the workers will be covered under the old contract, which expired on Sept. 30.

But I think they're pretty clearly grooming him for the national stage with him being blocked from significant advancement in Indiana. Whens the last time you sat a Secretary of Transportation with that much consistent media exposure?

October 4, 20241 yr I support Federal legislation banning the longshoreman union and mandating that the ports be fully automated and run by AI no later than five minutes ago.

That would finally bring US ports, technologically, into the 20th century. And I'm not joking. Fully automated ports have been a thing since the 1990's.
October 5, 20241 yr Might not be a bad idea, in the dirty bomb, bio/chemical weapon age, to inspect ALL the cargo containers coming into our ports, but that is just me. That makes more sense than a wall.

Yeah, like I have no problem with making a buck, but when you get exorbitantly greedy you can F off.

That makes more sense than a wall. It’s kind of hard because you also have to check inside the container which you can’t do until it’s empty. A lot of companies that get a lot of containers delivered a part of the C-TPAT program where the receiver will do the inspections when they get them delivered. Works pretty well. I imagine they have some kind of sensor suite at the ports that check for all of the other stuff.
October 5, 20241 yr Most cargo entering US ports gets screened or inspected long before they actually enter US ports.

The lefty loyalists love him because he is well spoken and can attack well, but when he ran in 2020 he was relatively moderate compared to the Warren, Yang, Booker types.

Dems can't win elections without blue collar working class union voters. It's why Trump won in 2016, and why Biden won in 2020. But it remains to be seen just how willing they are to vote for a black woman. If this election is even remotely close, then there's no way Pete is a viable candidate. Union voters just will not vote for a gay man in the next couple decades. You'd need to somehow figure out another way to win an election without their vote. Same goes for a large percentage of religous minorities. The gay thing is an immediate non-starter for them too. It's sad, obviously, but this is the country we live in. There's a reason why this election won't be a blowout victory for democrats and it's because more than 70 million adults are mentally ill.

The much larger issue is that black and Latino voters won't support a gay candidate in the numbers required. When same-sex marriage failed in the early 2000s in CA, it was because of the African American and Latino vote. While things have changed, there is still a large group of religious African American and Latino voters that won't support a gay man. Frankly, homophobia is most prevalent among minority groups at this point as compared to white working class voters.
