Posted November 14, 2024Nov 14 So I think everyone wants Howie to extend Baun. But the numbers will be tough. He’s having a pro bowl calibre season and has been both a playmaker and a really good tackler. He’s everywhere making plays. But it’s only been 9 games. What do we think? Around 3 years 28-30 million with 12 guaranteed?

November 14, 2024Nov 14 Its a little early to offer him a top salary. We have been burned before by one season flashes. He is 28, and in his prime now..., but injuries happen, and he have young players that we have drafted. And before this contract year season...he did not do that much. Patrick Queen makes 6.1 mil and Holcomb 4.7, for the steelers...so 3 years 30 mil is a little too much. I will leave this one to Howie to come up with a fair number.

Baun is actually 27 ... he will turn 28 at the end of December. I wish Roseman had signed him to a three year non-guaranteed contract when they got him -- that is a strategy Roseman has used in the past when signing low demand free agents in case the player blossoms like Baun has. (The second and third years in that type of non-guaranteed contract are essentially team options to continue to employ the player; if the player does not work out, you just cut him after a year ... if he does, you have him locked up for two more years at a reasonable salary. Players resist signing those, for obvious reasons, unless they have no leverage.) If you don't have a guy locked up like that, well, you're just gonna have to pay him. I doubt Baun will cost so much that he would be priced out of the Eagles range.

Queen signed a 3 year 41 million contract. Holcomb is pretty average. Maybe you are right, but right now Baun is playing like a top LB. He’s 27, so if he backs himself he will know that this next contract might be his major one. I would love to get him for 3-4 years at 5/6 million per year - but doubt he signs for that.
November 14, 2024Nov 14 TJ Edwards had a break out season and walked, Last year Morrow and Cunningham were adequate starters they walked, Baun is having a break out season that will convince Howie that the Player recruitment department are LB whisperers who can find diamonds in a turdpile, I think it's 50:50 Baun tests free agency after Howie tries a low ball before the end of the season, because he's convinced he can get another plug and play rental if worst comes to worst.

November 14, 2024Nov 14 Not concerned about that ... Howie is THE master of making the cap work for us. Pay him something that makes him feel appreciated and want to stay without overpaying (whatever that number is).
November 14, 2024Nov 14 People act like Edwards wanted to stay here or something. It was his dream to be a bear. He signed (agreed to sign) for under market value to play for a perennial loser, just 3 minutes into the legal tampering period. That being said, his (TJ's) deal affects the bar for his position and I believe that's where you start with Baun. Since Baun has a smaller sample of starts at ILB, I think the team should try to get a little less guaranteed money in it and more performance based incentives.
November 14, 2024Nov 14 From https://overthecap.com/contracts Maybe something like Kaden Ellis. $24M over three years - $8M APY but with a larger chunk guaranteed. It lets Howie add void years to spread out the cap hits.

That's how Howie does these magic "deals" Nothing special to it except for doing them as early as possible

November 14, 2024Nov 14 He's a linebacker, so in typical fashion they will let him walk at the end of the season then try and "plug and play" the next FA 1 yr LB
November 14, 2024Nov 14 Baun looks like a much better player than Edwards. More of an impact guy. Edwards was just competent. Baun is def above average. Him and Dean together are outstanding so far this season. I doubt they let him walk.
November 14, 2024Nov 14 I don't know about comparisons to TJ Edwards. But Edwards had Kyzir White and Reddick. That combo was solid and was part of the SB team. Baun is a quality LB. We need to keep him. Huff & Smith are just ok and Dean has his strengths & weaknesses. As a group, they're doing better than last year, and Fangio is making it work.

Baun is currently playing like a top linebacker. Put yourself in his agents shoes. Would you really advise him to take a 3 year 18 million contract? Would be great for the Eagles if he took it, but if he keeps playing like this for the rest of the year - he could get a lot more on the open market. Give him 3 years 30 million - 16 guaranteed. 9 million signing bonus. Base of 2.5 million in 2025 for minimal 5.5 hit. Base of 4.5 in 2026 for 7.5 hit Unguaranteed base of 14 in 2027. In reality - will either cut or re- negotiate at that point. So actually a 2 year 13 million contract with a 3 million dead cap in 2026 if Eagles move on.

He’s only got 2-3 big earning years left and if he spends them on one of those deals, he’s holding out. JMO
