Even if Baun is a nice guy, he’d be holding out next training camp if he were one one of those deals after this season.  He’s only got 2-3 big earning years left and if he spends them on one of those deals, he’s holding out.  JMO

Maybe, but the time to make that decision is really before that deal is signed.  Often that type of deal is structured with the salary escalating year over year (like, $1.5M first year with a $500k signing bonus, then $3.5M, then $5M); consequently, in those last two years the player will make a very meaningful chunk of change compared to his career earnings, which makes holding out a bit of a risk.

Every week that goes bye the price goes up.

When we were up 12-10 and Washington went for it on 4th and 2

Baun gets blocked by a pulling OL and sheds him to make the stop on Daniels

if you haven’t seen it watch it. Huge fn play what a beast this guy is

He’s likely going to want a very good contract but before this year he was seen as a pass rusher not a MLB. Now he’s making plays all over and he’s been a vital piece of this defense. Is that something he can sustain for the next 2-3 years? Or is he another player who’s playing above his ability in a contract year? That’s the tricky game Howie now needs to play.

7-9 million a year

He'll definitely want to go on the open market and I highly doubt Roseman will be the highest bidder.  ....That's why if they can get it done during the season it may cost less.  But if I were Baun or his agent, I would want to go to into free agency......

In one of the offseason interviews, Howie acknowledged that they had a good group of LBs both years they went to the Super Bowl. I think he learned from last year's group. He signed Baun and Devin White, drafted Trotter and expected Huff to replace Reddick.

Howie needs to not let Baun walk. And also show further commitment to the position to draft another LB. I wouldn't expect high, but maybe a 3rd or 4th to develop more talent.

We’ve seen this before. There’s no way Howie resigns him. Might’ve been able to get him cheap after the first week or two but not now.

Can Baun and Huff swap contracts??

Would he take my firstborn child? I don't have children but having sex with a lady of the female persuasion willing to agree to the deal is the least I could do

On a serious note though, surely anyone can see the difference he has made and would pay him accordingly

Kind of feel Howie is changing some Howieisms, in that:

1) He drafted 2 CBs with his first 2 picks

2) He paid for a running back.

Both of the above have been incredibly successful and Howie got them right.

I think there is a big difference between a solid LB like TJ Edwards and Baun. Baun has been playing superbly and I think Howie will at least try and get it done. Baun may hold out for a big pay day, but I feel there is a deal to be done now which would provide Baun with security for life whilst not ruining our cap.

I don't think Baun is this good anywhere else, honestly. Look at his partnership with Nakobe Dean. They help each other flourish. Dean without Baun is not the same player. Baun without Dean was a marginal option in a mediocre defense. This really is a case of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts

I think Baun is thriving in Fangio's defense, but I also think now that the NFL has seen him as a starting off-ball LB, a good coach would get similar production out of him. I totally believe in "team" --- I mean ... that's why we won in 2017. When everybody buys in, it can be special. But I don't necessarily believe Baun wouldn't have personal success elsewhere. He's at the age where success deserves market value compensation.

I'm not sure how much of an opportunity Baun was given in New Orleans , but his entire time here, in OTAs, TC, preseason, he worked as the starter. Fangio viewed him as a starter and Baun made the most of the opportunity.

Yes, I agree - but would that have happened anywhere else? The confluence of circumstances in this case is beautiful, the magic beans were planted in the right soil. But put him somewhere else and I don't think he brings the magic. That's not a knock on him because he clearly has the talent to thrive. It's more an acknowledgement that this is the right team, the right coaches, the right teammates and most importantly at the right time, to help him excel

So I think everyone wants Howie to extend Baun. But the numbers will be tough.

He’s having a pro bowl calibre season and has been both a playmaker and a really good tackler. He’s everywhere making plays.

But it’s only been 9 games.

What do we think? Around 3 years 28-30 million with 12 guaranteed?

Lurie and Howie dont place a 10 mil positional value on the LB position. I would guess 6-8 maybe

Howie didn't sign Baun to be a linebacker though, he thought he was a back up edge rusher and a special teamer. Fangio is the one that told howie that baun is an inside linebacker. So howie was wrong on this one too.

Put Howie in the basement!

Hey, it worked out. Glad Baun is here.

I think we are looking at $12 million a year, so 3/36 seems like the ballpark in what he will cost.

Will the Eagles pay that? I would tend to think they will. Obviously letting the starting LBs walk last season played a pretty big part in the collapse we experienced.

This year, if we go far in the playoffs, I think the team "keeps the band together" on defense, which means bringing back Sweat, Baun and Milton Williams.

If you look at 2023, we brought back Cox, Kelce and Bradberry and Slay, while letting Hargrave, CJGJ, Epps, Edwards and Kyzir White walk.

The big difference is that we had nine starters enter free agency that year. So there were a lot of hard choices. But this year Becton is the only other starter that we have entering free agency. Therefore it will be easier to retain our guys on defense. Plus, Kelce was the top center in football and Cox, Bradberry and Slay all played premium positions.

Baun won't get top LB money and Williams isn't getting top DT money. Sweat might be pricey, but he took a paycut to be here this year, so he might come back for a deal similar to Huff's.

Moreover, we will have around $50 million in cap space and, realistically, don't have to spend any money on other parts of the team. So we may as well use it on proven commodities.

Probably won't need much. He's a system player. He knows it.

Queen signed a 3 year 41 million contract. Holcomb is pretty average.

Maybe you are right, but right now Baun is playing like a top LB. He’s 27, so if he backs himself he will know that this next contract might be his major one. I would love to get him for 3-4 years at 5/6 million per year - but doubt he signs for that.

There are a lot more games ahead this season..before we have to decide.

Baun knows that he is great in this system, and he wants to stay here. We want him to stay here.

So let's wait and see what is agreed upon.

He's going to make $13/$14mil a year next year and there's no way that Lowie will pay him. He walks in FA.

Until he blows out his knee at some point prior....no, if he can get 25 million and remove risk at a place he likes and actually gave him an opportunity...he takes it.  Or, do you risk in for a couple million more?  That being said, Howie SHOULD be absolutely making him offers right now.  To not do so is just stupid.

We had good LB play the year we won the Super Bowl. We had good LB play the year we lost the SB. We had mediocre LB play the years in between. Howie adjusts to situations more than people make it seem. He'll absolutely be trying to keep Baun. He still has time with Dean, so if a situation arises in a couple years where it's time to decide between extending Dean or riding with Trotter Jr., that will be determined by the value per performance based on where each player is at that time. But right now, Baun is a key player on one of the best defenses so far this year.
