I believe right now on the season we are near 58% run. While philosophically I do believe the best split is 50/50, right now, we are having too much success to change. When this offense struggles, it is usually during those moments where we pass more than run. It seems like too many completed passes come back because of penalties and that puts us behind the sticks. Then there are moments like this: Mailata is one of our best players and that was embarrassing for him. But you won't see anything like that when we run the ball. Right now, we demoralize teams with our run game. It wears out defenses, keeps ours rested and fresh, lowers the risk of penalties (impossible to have ineligible man downfield on a run) and keeps opposing offenses off the field, preventing them from getting into a rhythm. The bottom line is that most defenses are built to defend the pass since most teams pass more than 50%. Right now there is a real opportunity for dominant run teams like the Eagles, Lions and Ravens to expose them --- and that's what we are seeing happen. It sucks, I guess, for any WR that is more obsessed with personal glory than team success --- but I believe all our players are "all in" with "team first." He was caught off guard, happens at least once to everyone. Didn't hear Verse's name that much aside from that. Also... teams are built to stop the pass, so if you have a capable oline and a decent rb you will have success running the ball. If you have an elite oline and elite rb, you will see what we saw Sunday night. And pretty much all season.

It looks like maybe you stopped reading it right there as you stated pretty much the same point I made later in that post. TL;DR version: Running exposes defenses built to stop the pass. It minimizes the potential for execution mistakes (negative plays). It creates more rest opportunity for your own defense and wears down the opposing defense. It keeps the opposing offense off the field and continuing a rhythm. AND in Mailata's case, it keeps you from becoming a highlight clip for a defender.
November 28, 2024Nov 28 You know the way this team plays ie a dominant running game with a HoF caliber RB and with a few deep bombs to an elite WR almost reminds me of a certain dynastic team from the 90s...i guess we dont have the HoF TE though.
November 29, 2024Nov 29 Is Smitty out again this week? Apologies if I missed that news. Ravens Pass D is meh, so it would be awesome if he could play on Sunday.

December 1, 2024Dec 1 He'll sit this one out. So it's going to be an AJ all day kind of game. Hopefully. 9 catches for 145 yards and 2 TDs.
December 2, 2024Dec 2 I really don’t think Jalen has a lot of confidence in Dotson. He’s been kind of a low key bust trade. There were times in this game he didn’t seem to know his presnap assignments. I feel like Jalen trusts Johnny Wilson more than Dotson right now.

He’s the #3 wr and has had, what, at least 5 games as the #2? 1 game as the “#1”? And he has 11 for 117. Greg Ward, Quez Watkins, and Jalen Reagor are laughing at him.

I didn’t want to give him the full on bust moniker yet especially when you consider how guys have turned things around with good coaching. I would like to see more out of the player. So far he’s not delivering though.

This is his second chance. He’s not yet a bust for us, but he’s well on his way. Hell get a chance in camp next year no matter what happens this year. This team has a lot of stars to be paid and there won’t be enough resources to add a viable #3 wr. So he’ll get another chance after this year too.

He had decent numbers his first and second season with the Commanders, but the new coaching staff just didn’t think he was good enough and the word out of D.C. was that he was struggling to learn the playbook. Kind of looks the same here. They aren’t putting a lot on his plate.

December 7, 2024Dec 7 ^^^^^^^^^^ Exactly. I hope the Birds can target a TE in the draft or FA. Sick and tired of this TE being hurt and not available, year after year. Good player, but not reliable.

Good player, but not reliable. Here's the play where he hurt his shoulder: Here's the play where he broke his arm: While his latest isn't a result of a dirty play, here's the video for those that are curious: and here was his broken ankle in 2020: All 4 of those injuries are what I call "bad luck." It doesn't matter what person is wearing #88 in each of those cases. The exact injury that does happen will happen regardless of the person. To me, "unreliable" is what you would call DJax in his last two seasons here --- where it was mostly non-contact, soft-tissue injuries that just lingered. Goedert also had the hamstring issue this year, but his only other soft-tissue injury was a calf strain. One of the things I really like about Goedert is he bounces back quickly from injuries. But if you just eliminated the two dirty plays that caused him to break bones, you probably wouldn't think of him as injury prone or unreliable.

I still dont think the play where he broke his arm was dirty. Goedert had his stiff arm up in the guys face and the player grabbed the first part he could to bring him down which was his arm. I think he was just brought down awkwardly. I doubt the player knew in a split second that if he took him down that way it would break his arm. If it was against any other team i dont think fans would be calling it a dirty play.

It was an arm version of a hip drop tackle. Watch that replay again. He could have pushed Goedert out of bounds. He could have attempted to grab any other part of his body. This was a practiced motion to defeat a stiff arm and ultimately remove a threat from a game. He purposely positions his arm to get into position to twist Goedert's arm on the way down and then twists his body to fall on the arm. It was as calculated as a peanut punch (I'm not calling the peanut punch dirty, just calculated and intentional). It was a technique that should be banned and probably will be as soon as we see another broken arm from it on a bigger name player than Goedert. As much as I want to believe, like you, that players aren't trying to injure other players, every time I watch the replay, I'm even more convinced that was a calculated action and not incidental where he grabbed whatever he could (like some facemasks or horse collars). He had options and chose what he did.
