Clinching a Playoff Spot (The Quest for the 1 Seed ... is it Better to Have the 2 Seed?)

We can clinch a playoff spot as early as this weekend (with a win or tie) with some additional help.  Those scenarios are outlined below and will track this weekly:

Seems the chances to get the #1 seed dropped significantly last night with Detroit beating GB.  Looking at the tiebreaking procedures:

image.png.0d78407795cc758aeec1b8fc08d37f3b.png

Obviously these don't apply unless Detroit drops another game to even the records.  If that does happen though:

  • #1 does not apply since we will not play Detroit
  • Detroit would have to lose to one of their remaining NFC opponents (CHI, SF, MIN) in order to even the conference record (#2)
  • If they dropped an NFC game we'd be tied for #3 (common opponents are LAR, TB, DAL, JAX, GB) - we would have to beat Dallas in order for this to remain tied - if we lose to them then Detroit wins this tiebreaker
  • So, if Detroit loses an NFC game and we beat Dallas (and we both win out otherwise ... certainly not a given), then it is on to #4 (strength of victory - unfortunately Detroit has the SOV advantage over us)

So don’t think we will clinch this week? But every chance to next week I’m sure.

As for the #1 seed… Well I mean that’s unlikely at this point but there’s hope. Detroit will need to lose 2 more but with Minnesota, Buffalo and SF (though admittedly that’s looking an easy game right now) on their schedule there’s still hope.

We won't get the bye, objective now is secure second seed before week 18 to give key players a rest

It is probably reasonable to think our chances at the 1 seed are about as likely as losing the 2 seed.  The odds of getting the 1 seed now are slim ... and the odds of dropping out of the 2 seed spot are also slim (we have a 3 game lead over Seattle who currently sit in the 3 spot and a 4 game lead over Atlanta who have the 4th spot).  I know last year's collapse is still fresh in the minds of most but (knock on wood) this team just feels different - its hard to see that happening again.

Bills have the best chance to give Lions another loss, and don't count out a division battle against Vikings to end the season. Injuries, fatigue, luck, things happen.

then again, none of those wear a specific team jersey.

We won't get the first, lets just hope we can get second seed....im ok with playing at Detroit but not at Minnesota....

Sure. Just saying in this case (Vikings beating Lions) it's possible.

Here we go again with this. What is your fear of the stupid vikings? Help us understand!

The Eagles are 3 games ahead for at least the #2 seed, with 5 games left to play. 3 wins clinches it.

I can't even think about the #1 seed until the Lions lose one game.... And it has to be to an NFC team. Even if the Lions lose to the Bills next week, the Lions still hold the tie-breaker.

Minnesota are frauds, the Eagles will destroy them like before.

take some anxiety meds or something.

You can only control what you can control. So win out, and see how things go.

Whatever seeding they get, win those games too. No excuses.

We need to win out (should be doable) then the Packers to beat the Vikings in week 17 and then the Vikings beat the Lions in week 18. Do those things, we get the 1 Seed.

If We win out, and the Vikings and Lions win out up to week 18, and then we make it to the NFCCG along with the #1 Seed making it to the NFCCG, we'd go to either Minnesota or Detroit depending on the winner of the Vikings-Lions week 18 game.

I don't like being away for the NFCCG, but we can beat either team if we play up to our abilities and our coach doesn't act like a fool and leave points on the field.

If we win out, we end the season 15-2.

If Detroit's only loss is to Minny in week 18, they also end up 15-2.  That would even our conference record (we'd both have 2 losses to NFC opponents).  We would also have the same record in common games, so it would be on to the strength of victory tiebreaker.  I've read that Detroit owns the advantage there (that surprised me) so they would still get the 1 seed.  Need for them to drop 2 more than us before the end of the season to get that 1 seed.

I left part of my thinking out of my post and that was the assumption (on my part) that the Lions will lose to the Bills next week, finishing 14-3 if they only lose to the Vikings after that.

I'm watching that game (with Merrill and Mike's broadcast), right now. It's 7-7 with 2 minutes to go in the 1st. Gonna be a nail biter!

Cool

Objective one achieved in week 14. But this team needs to have much higher goals and one of those is still the #1 seed.

1 seed is going to take a miracle. Stupid useless Fing Packers
