Increased complexity and time by by doctors is compensated. When practice profits are calculated they actually appropriately factor in referrals, NICU stays and studies ordered. RVU structured pay are based on actual obtainable goals or eliminated entirely. Appropriately staffing and supporting obgyn departments will improve downstream outcomes.

Speaking of which, check out this tidbit: Quote An insurer’s letter was sent directly to a newborn child denying coverage for his fourth day in a neonatal intensive care unit. "You are drinking from a bottle,” the denial notification said, and "you are breathing on your own.” If only the baby could read.

This is such utter horse-ish. Insurance is a contract that a person buys and signs up for. If the insurance company doesn't honor the contract, then sue them and win. But crying because the contract you signed up for doesn't cover the care you need -- then do more diligence on the front end. Companies exist to maximize profits. Consumers being lazy and stupid helps them make more money, but it's not their job to protect people from their own stupidity.

December 5, 20241 yr Saw on reddit that apparently United used AI to automatically approve/deny claims and it had like a 90% wrongful denial rate. Not sure if that's true or how long it went on, but yowza. That would make sense though if they are using AI that it would send a letter directly to a newborn in a NICU

No sane person would be like "Dude, you're drinking from a bottle now. Grow the f*** up"

Not saying that there aren't plenty of shady ass doctors out there doing exactly that right now, but it's probably far more rare than almost any other type of insurance fraud. It’s usually the providers themselves committing fraud, not patients. They’ll just charge for services that weren’t performed, or double charge the same service. Waaaaaay more money in it for the provider than patient.

Yes because that's so quick and easy to do, especially when you're undergoing financial stress due to a medical condition.
