They’ll just charge for services that weren’t performed, or double charge the same service. Waaaaaay more money in it for the provider than patient. You mean like charging $25 for a box of tissues?

I mean like a dentist not administering anesthesia to children and pulling teeth unnecessarily… or charging for surgery that never occurred. This is relatively common because it can be scaled up across all of your patients/services. For an individual, not only do you need a provider in on it, but you can only do it once, or at best, a few times a year if you are pretending to have some chronic condition.

Insurance companies are absolutely trash some times and United is one of the worst. The vast majority of Americans have very limited choices in their insurer options so to act like they're just making ignorant decisions and choosing poorly is beyond naive. Almost as naive as saying "if there's a problem just sue the multi-billion dollar corporation and it'll all be fixed NBD" but not quite. Constantly taking advantage of desperate people makes people act desperately. Breaking news at 11.

If the insurance company doesn't honor the contract, then sue them and win. But crying because the contract you signed up for doesn't cover the care you need -- then do more diligence on the front end. Companies exist to maximize profits. Consumers being lazy and stupid helps them make more money, but it's not their job to protect people from their own stupidity. Ok, first off, insurance plans are contracts of adhesion. Secondly, most people are locked into certain group plans so they can’t exactly shop around. It’s not the easy. Group plans with a physician haven’t trickled down to the masses yet. Also, maximizing profits means reduced expenses. You’d think companies would, you know, go for efficiency to achieve this, but they don’t because it’s actually hard work. So products and services get cut right off because it’s easier to do that and people (this includes management and executives) are lazy and/or incompetent just like everyone else, just on a higher level. So when products and services get cut, it’s the consumer who pays. And you’re wondering why they’re getting upset. You’re promoting gilded age business practices, but you’re decrying a gilded age populist response. I’m not sure why you’re surprised. The answer is more nuanced than "don’t be poor”. It’s like telling Ukraine "don’t get invaded”.

It doesn’t matter what "system” you have, there will be scumbags in a system which services 350 million people. As it is, the system we have provides the highest quality of healthcare in the world. Isn’t perfect? No. But it’s better than the rest of the world.

I sprained my ankle several years back playing indoor soccer and when I went to the ortho they gave me one of those simple velcro ankle braces to wear - you can get them at the pharmacy for like 20-30 bucks. They billed the insurance company $300 for it and of course I had to pay a portion of that then as well.

We’re never going to get insurance reform without first getting government reform. like abortions for transgender immigrants!!!

Probably close to. For out of pocket care if you have true "F you money". Yup. For the health/longevity of the vast majority of its citizens? Nope. Not even close.

Then it's "negotiated" between the insurance company and hospital.
