It took a bit to blame Obama. You might want to update your firmware.

Ya know I wanted to fight you on that but I haven't seen it in forever and it probably doesn't hold up.

Usual suspects is still good. Some of the luster has worn off now that I'm not a 20 year old kid anymore, but it definitely still holds up.

I have been reading post after post like these: The blood cancer patient that couldn't get drugs approved to raise blood cell count. Kept being denied, went through appeals until blood cell counts were so low they were irreversible. The kids with seizures who couldn't get the medicine they were prescribed to stop it because it isn't formulary. Had to use the UHC approved meds and keep seizing for months to get a reversal.

In case people want to say these are just Facebook posts and there's more to it, let me tell you a fun story from training. 10 year old presents with altered mental status. Scans show diffuse inflammation. He has acute necrotizing leukoencephalopathy a rare post viral condition.  Steroids, ivig, exchange transfusion weren't working.  We waited over a week for approval for the interleukin inhibitor therapy with multiple rejections and "peer to peers" (a laughable concept).  All the while his brain continued to literally consume itself.  It was eventually approved. It worked. The inflammation stopped. But by that point he had essentially no remaining higher brain functioning. I still wonder what could have changed if it was approved earlier.

So yeah I've hated United Healthcare for awhile. F em. F Brian Thompson. I don't advocate for assassinations but I'm not sorry he's dead.

Here's hoping I don't walk into the benefits meeting next week to hear they're switching to United Health Care.  Had them once and they were awful.  Have had Aetna deny claims for me a few times for Prolia. The stuff doesn't cost $8K either.

Isn't UHC the underwriter for Medicare?

And that's just one life these vile human beings negativity impacted for their bottom line.

Another massive issue with health insurance is we don't allow insurance companies to properly price risk because it might offend people. Simply put -- obese people should pay more for health insurance. We have no problem when auto insurance companies charge people with a bad driving record more in premiums, or even when they charge more for your males based on statistics. But if a health insurance company wanted to charge more for obese people, or people that don't exercise, don't get routine vaccines, or, yes, are part of a higher risk population, people scream discrimination. Obamacare made this infinitely worse. Having the government place burdensome mandates and regulations has corrupted the market.

That post is absolutely 100% accurate. Ignoring it won’t change this fact.

United's gross profits have tripled since 2014 though

They for sure are struggling making record profits year after year.

From 2017 - 2023, revenue went from $201mm to $371mm, so up 85%. Gross profit went from $47mm to $91mm, so up 94%. Gross margin only went up ~1% from 23.4% to 24.5% despite the massive growth. And a ton of their growth came via acquisitions. Looking at raw gross profit dollars instead of margins, and ignoring acquisitions, is ridiculously misleading. And yeah -- private enterprise is in business to make money.

The problem is everyone wants insurance companies to behave like a public enterprise that isn't motivated by profit but by general welfare. That's the government, not a private company. If you want health insurance to act like a government program, then pass a national health insurance plan/Constitutional Amendment. Stop being shocked that private companies maximize profits.

Dude stop. Insurance companies are absolutely trash some times and United is one of the worst. The vast majority of Americans have very limited choices in their insurer options so to act like they're just making ignorant decisions and choosing poorly is beyond naive. Almost as naive as saying "if there's a problem just sue the multi-billion dollar corporation and it'll all be fixed NBD" but not quite.

Constantly taking advantage of desperate people makes people act desperately.  Breaking news at 11.

Vikas 100% has stock in United Healthcare.

it's us against the elites who don't even know how much their polos cost!  :flex:

You've had one of the more ridiculous takes in this thread on this issue.  "

Nope. Not a share. I just realize that asking for profit enterprises to act like charities is foolish. But it's the basic guiding principle of both parties now. Like when AOC cries about JPM doing loans for carbon based fuel companies. Guess what you dumb **** -- you're in Congress. Pass a law making lending to such companies illegal and people will follow it. But stop castigating those following the laws because you're too stupid and worthless to do your job.

You want healthcare to be a right and provided to all? Pass a law/amendment. Otherwise, STFU.

That hurts coming from the guy who openly supports terrorists.

You all want to blame companies for making money. That's their job. If you want universal healthcare then pass it. Stop whining about companies acting like...checks notes...companies.

Ok, and?  That's still significant growth despite your assertion that being forced to ignore pre-existing conditions is somehow handicapping them and forcing them to provide poorer quality care. It's silly.

And I'm not shocked. But to act as if that is a reasonable model for a nation 's healthcare is incredibly naive. If we want private insurance companies to focus solely on maximizing profit then they need government oversight.  I'm not a "medicare for all" person but acting as if unfettered free market is the solution is equally as absurd. They'd end up like cable companies, creating regional oligopolies and provide the bare minimum.

And if you disagree then please enlighten me, why are we worsening in every health outcome metric compared to every other western nation?  Because it's sure as crap not too much government.

The difference between you and everyone else in the thread is we have to pay our kids medical bills.  We've all been overcharged or had claims denied for all kinds of dumb reasons.  You just don't have a clue what you're talking about as usual.
