December 23, 20241 yr Before I answer is this some sort of euphemism, like Hershey Highway, or Robert Frost's Road Less Traveled? it feels like a trap.

December 24, 20241 yr So Dave, all kidding aside, I think the matter is a bit complicated than what you narrowed it down to. From a national and world security perspective, the canal is a vital asset to security of the world. It is key that the canal not fall into the wrong hands. This supersedes any other claims. The U.S. is partly to blame. I think the canal treaty was a mistake, a big one. But we also abandoned in large part our connection to the canal, and haven't participated in the upkeep of the infrastructure. If the U.S. doesn't step up to the plate, China is waiting in the wings. From where I'm sitting, Trump's bravado is a negotiating ploy to push out Chinese influence over the canal and canal zone. But his administration also needs to step up to the plate to help upkeep and modernize the canal and canal zone.

Carter ended detente with the Soviet Union, but that’s because the Soviets invaded Afghanistan. I don’t agree with his decision to boycott the Olympics though. Panama had a lot of protests against the U.S. operating the canal in the 60s and 70s. I like how you conveniently leave that part out.
