oops, it was Cruz, not DeSantis.  Memory failed me on who she was criticizing for what, but the point is still the same:

Cruz fled the state when the grid failed.  Did Bass take a vacation to Cancun?

The real problem in California is the overbuilding in areas that a prone to fire without building in good fire breaks.  It used to be that there was a lot of open land between settlement out there but not anymore.

To answer some questions in here:

Arson -- the last couple fires (Sunset and Kenneth) were arson events. The speculation (not proven) is that criminal organizations/gangs are now purposefully setting fires to force evacuations and then burglarizing the abandoned homes. This clearly happened with the Sunset fires (Hollywood Hills). I'm anti death penalty, but these people have me reconsidering.

Current Status -- they big key is the winds have died down. On Tuesday and Wednesday, we had 40+ mph winds which meant planes and helicopters couldn't fly and fight the fires. This definitely helped the Palisades and Eaton (Altadena/Pasadena) fires spread. Now, they generally can stop the advance of these fires in a few hours. You can smell the smoke, and I wouldn't recommend going for a run outside, but ~90% of LA is fine.

Political Failure -- people are angry, and there are legitimate reasons. The city/county failed to clear brush for years. Everyone is focused on the ~$17mm cut Bass made to the fire department this year, but this goes back to 2009 when they massively cut the LAFD. The funding level was never restored. Bass going to Ghana when this was warned about (high winds, fire potential) for a week was just unbelievably stupid. The firefighters themselves are doing an amazing job, but they have been let down by the politicians. Bass won't be re-elected after this.

The discussion is around one party criticizing the other during times of crisis for political purposes.  That's what she did.

Cruz is a US Senator with no control over local response. Bass is the mayor of Los Angeles thanks to unions and moron Hollywood elites.

It's OK to say going to Ghana with advance warning of this was a stupid decision.

He should've stayed in TX without power damn it!

Newsom should have just set up a bunch of those big industrial fans to blow the fires back away from all the houses.

Stop it.  Democrats have been more vocal that anyone when a disaster happens in a red state.  When the Surfside building collapsed Karen Bass (LA Mayor) said that it was evidence of a larger problem within the GOP and that they needed to be voted out.  How was the timing and level on that?

Where you seeing that?

In any case, I'm happy to point fingers at both sides as you are well aware.

Don’t politicize this? Oh ok. NOW we don’t want to hold leadership responsible for the mis-management of a disaster that’s been predicted for some time now. GTFOOH. This isn’t a once every hundred years storm or a rogue asteroid plowing into the city that no one could foresee or plan for. A lot of people who actually live there are completely outraged at their leaders. I don’t know why any of the rest of us should give them grace.

I feel for anyone who loses their home. It’s a sheety club that no one wants to be a part of. Even the celebs who will financially recover lost things that money can’t buy. It looks like an apocalypse out there. Thinking of all those who are going through the shock of this especially those without family or financial means to help them recover.

So sad. The Devastation is horrific.

The real anger is coming when people try to rebuild. There are a ton of issues:

Insurance -- it was already impossible to get fire insurance in Los Angeles thanks to our insane state regulators who wouldn't allow insurance companies to raise rates. People are screaming about policies being canceled, but they were canceled because the state wouldn't let them raise rates after all the recent fires. So most people (myself included) get fire insurance from the state. Well, that fund has ~$700mm and over $5bn of exposure just in the Palisades, so it will need a bailout.

Permits -- getting permits in LA for anything is a nightmare, and if you're on the beach in Malibu, the Coastal Commission is even worse. It's going to take people YEARS to get approval if they ever do. The Coastal Commission wants to stop houses on the beach, and now they can.

Financing -- a bunch of people just lost their sub 3% mortgages. Now, even if they can buy land and get permits, the borrowing cost has more than doubled. People won't be able to afford a comparable house.

DEI caused 80 MPH wind gusts  Got it. You haven't a clue how nearly impossible this is to contain.

No, bro, you don’t understand. The chief who has an engineering degree and had a top 50 test score out of 16k applicants is a DEI hire because she’s a lesbian.

Also the gubmint made Fire 2.0, which is specifically designed to avoid burning wet lumber and instead targets houses and cars full of accelerants.

Oh, wow, so you mean basic forest and brush management can make a difference? Who knew?

Awhile ago I asked someone with the forest service here in Florida how Florida is able to do better than western states when it comes to forest fires, and his response was that Florida is pretty big on controlled burns and clearing brush whereas western states have been dropping the ball on that.

Im not a big fan of DeSantis, he’s not a very good politician, but he is a pretty decent manager most of the time.

Florida also happens to be like 90% swamp and wetlands. Which definitely helps.

Getting the causeway to Sanibel Island up after 2 1/2 weeks was astounding. Yeah, it was the engineers, but he was leading the charge.

The causeway for people that don't know is 3 miles of bridges and small islands that connect Sanibel to the mainland that was completely washed away in some areas.

He isn't good at politics, but he manages storms well.
