Walter Nolen (Mississippi DT) -- DRAFTED BY ARIZONA #16

Need to replace Milton and add depth at dline. Nolen is a stud.  6.5 sacks last season

I’d like this pick to join the rotation with Ojomo, Davis and Carter if we do in fact lose Williams. Mock drafts have him going late 1st round, but a lot can change in a month and a half with our needs and his draft stock.

"And there is something else: A report that some teams have removed Nolen from their boards altogether due to the "behavioral concerns'' charge that has followed him since high school.”

Doesn’t feel like a Howie guy….

I mean Carter had issues though right? I guess the bigger question might be… Does this guy have the talent to warrant taking the risk?

JC’s issues were off the field - the question is if Nolen’s attitude will cap his potential (as the insinuation is that he takes plays off, and isn’t highly motivated to improve).

Starting to warm up to the idea assuming the character concerns (if that's the appropriate term) aren't major

Mixed opinions…

ESPN

NFL.com

DT Walten Nolen – Ole Miss

Both sites had the Eagles taking Nolen. Here is what ESPN said.

"Nolen is very disruptive thanks to explosive traits and strong hands. He had 6.5 sacks and 15 run stops last season. And while he didn’t go to Georgia, Nolen at least keeps the Eagles’ direct line to SEC defensive tackles alive.”

And here is NFL.com.

"Why change something that works? Philadelphia moves up in Round 1 for a defensive lineman once again — after doing so to acquire Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis — plugging Nolen into the void left by free-agent departure Milton Williams. The Eagles give the Rams their late third-round pick and one of four fifth-rounders in order to move up six spots, while also receiving a sixth-round pick from Los Angeles in the deal.”

Nolen is an interesting prospect. Some people love him and think he could be a Top 20 pick. Others aren’t sold on him and see him in the late first or early second round. I think he’s definitely worthy of a first round pick. I know Fran Duffy is a big fan of his. We talked about Nolen down in Mobile and Fran spoke highly of him.

Nolen is 6-4, 296. He is athletic and powerful. Pairing Nolen with Jalen Carter would make life really tough for opposing offenses. Nolen was good in college, but is just scratching the surface of his ability. He could develop into a difference-maker.

Imagine replacing Milton Williams with a player who is bigger, stronger and still a high level athlete. I’m pretty sure Vic Fangio would be happy with that move.

Like him a lot but I have a natural skepticism that people are nailing pick #32 with the right name in March

Well, the fans and the media will continually juggle names and follow rumors of guys moving up and moving down.

But Howie and the college scouting department already have their boards ready knowing full well who they're going to take as the draft progresses.  What isn't known is the possible trades ahead of their pick and/or whether or not their top selections get taken.  I'm sure that Howie has already discussed interest from other teams about trades.

Howie is a wheeler dealer so he'll try to get his man.....

That has been his MO recently ... moved up in 3 of the last 4 drafts to get his guy (Davis, Smitty, Carter).  Other than last year when the board shook out perfectly (for us) that we were able to grab Mitchell with our own pick (guessing had he been snapped up earlier we would have taken DeJean there), when we didn't move up for the guy we were targeting we kinda got burned (going back to Marcus Smith in 2014, Reagor in 2020, etc.).  I think that is one of the lessons Howie talks about of having learned (and why he maneuvers to add extra picks to give himself ammo to make those moves up the board).

I'm pretty sure Reagor was Howie's guy. He was targeting speed. Reagor supposedly ran a 4.22 and 4.28 at his pro day after shedding his extra combine weight. Howie was in love. I think the lesson there was to not ignore red flags on the psych evaluation.

Let's go

They said the same thing about Carter- as far as character. Let him drop a little and then go up and get him.

It would be nice to draft this kid, but I fear Howie will have trade up to get him. Same with Starks.

I am 95% certain Howie will be trading up from 32, whether that is for Nolan or someone else he is targeting. With 19 picks between this year and next he has the ammo to do so ... I think he now believes quality is more important than quantity.

Schrager thinks he goes before Mason Graham and has him going at 11 to the Niners.

Could you imagine if that happened and then Howie traded up to get Graham? excited
