Stuck with Saquon

If you’re tired of the Eagles having an amazing running back who is somehow even better off the field, I’ve got bad news for you.

This is a smart move. The Eagles rewarded a player who just had one of the best seasons in the history of pro football and helped lead the team to a Super Bowl victory. You don’t nickel and dime that guy. He earned a raise. You give it to him.

In the postgame celebration (after the Eagles beat the Chiefs 40-22 in SB LIX), multiple people embraced Barkley and told him what a difference he made and how special he was. This was teammates. This was Nick Sirianni. Even Jeffrey Lurie. Barkley was special on and off the field. That’s a guy you want to reward.

This move won’t be lost on other players. They see the way the Eagles treat players. That will make them want to come to Philly even more. It doesn’t mean a bunch of free agents will sign cheap, but sometimes players have similar offers from teams. They look for reasons to choose one team over another. Moves like this help the Eagles case. As does their dominant 40-22 win over the Chiefs in SB LIX.

The move buys the Eagles a bit of extra cap room this year. They still aren’t going to sign a bunch of free agents, but they do have a bit more flexibility now. They also have additional space for another reason.

I have very mixed feelings on Bradberry. He was great in 2022 and helped the team reach the Super Bowl. He then committed a dumb penalty that cost them late in the game. Bradberry was awful in 2023. He had questionable effort on more than a few plays and that is something I struggle to accept.

Bradberry moved to safety last summer in hopes of finding a role. He got hurt and missed the season. By all accounts, he was a good teammate and supported the young DBs. I do appreciate that.

By cutting Slay and Bradberry, the Eagles have additional cap space.

The Eagles expect to lose Milton Williams and Josh Sweat next week. They want to get comp picks for them in 2026. Part of that equation is that the Eagles can’t sign free agents. They can sign players who were cut without that affecting the comp pick formula.

Because of that, guys like Robertson-Harris and Jones could be of interest. Vic Fangio was the head coach in Denver when they drafted Jones. And Jones has a similar build to Williams. Jones is 28 and has 30.5 career sacks. He could be a name to watch.

I thought this was a great interview with some good nuggets. Nothing on the current team, but good stories and some good philosophical stuff.
