time2rock Posted March 13 Posted March 13 Money Matters Posted: March 11th, 2025 | Author: Tommy Lawlor The offseason took its first really odd turn on Tuesday. We knew things were going to be a bit odd because of the lack of salary cap room and the number of key free agents. I did not anticipate this. The Eagles gave up a good starting safety for a disappointing OG who got benched last year. Why on earth would they do this? Apprarently this is about business. Money. CJGJ is a good player making good money. The Eagles would like to save some of that money. They are going to pay Jalen Carter megabucks next year. Cam Jurgens should get an extension this year. Reed Blankenship will need an extension. Where do you want to spend your money? You want to focus on great players and younger players. The Eagles wanted to save some money for the upcoming deals. The Eagles don’t have to pay CJGJ and they get a young, cheap OL for Jeff Stoutland to work with. This is probably a big hint that Mekhi Becton is gone. Green and Tyler Steen will compete for the RG spot. Green is 6-4, 325. He has started 23 games since being drafted 15th overall in 2022. Green has a lot of talent, but he’s been a major underachiever so far in his career. When you see a clip like this you can understand why Stout would have interest in working with him. Green will turn 24 this week so he’s a young guy who has a lot of football ahead of him. The question is whether Stout can get him to play good football on a consistent basis. One of the things that will help in a big way is being part of a good OL, both in terms of talent and chemistry. That wasn’t the case in Houston. That’s kinda crazy. OL are usually the most centered guys on the team. For an OL room to be "borerline toxic” really surprises me. The Eagles must feel that Green will be helped in a major way by joining a strong group that can bring out the best in him. What happens at safety? The Eagles have Sydney Brown and Lewis Cine already in place. The Eagles were very high on Brown when they drafted him. He was coming off an injury last year so that limited him to a STs role. He will have a full offseason to learn and compete for a starting role. Cine is an interesting guy. I was high on him in the 2022 draft. Here is something I wrote on him prior to the draft. FS Lewis Cine – Georgia – 6-2, 199 I’m throwing out a player who I project to go later in the first round, but who could be a wild card to go earlier than expected. When you watch UGA tape and focus on the front seven, this guy wearing #16 keeps making plays and diverting your attention. Cine is an outstanding tackler and good cover safety. I think he would be an excellent fit in the Eagles scheme. Cine hasn’t panned out in the NFL. He was with MIN and BUF before coming to Philly. He had a severe injury in 2022 that cost him most of the year. Cine has flashed good potential at times, but hasn’t developed as expected. The Eagles could add a safety early in the draft or they could sign a free agent. There are still plenty of moves to be made. They aren’t likely to involve big salaries, but you never know if it is the right player. I don’t know if that’s true. Justin Reid signed for 3 yrs/$31.5M so he wasn’t going to be cheap. Obviously he signed elsewhere so the Eagles weren’t going to win a bidding war, if they were in fact trying to get him. Howie Roseman told everyone this was going to be a different kind of offseason. He asked for patience. As of Tuesday night, the Eagles are the only team in the league not to sign an outside free agent. The Eagles will add players. They just won a Super Bowl and they want to win another one. They are just being very judicious about spending as they make plans for today and the future. ***** Another one is gone. Kenny Gainwell is signing a 1-year deal with Pittsburgh. Good luck to him there. Miles Sanders got cut by Carolina today. I wonder if he’d be interested in being Barkley’s backup. That was the role he had a Penn State for a couple of years. Probably not. I’m guessing the Eagles use a pick on a RB. http://igglesblitz.com/2025/03/money-matters/
