December 18, 20204 yr Author https://gratefuldeadoftheday.com/07-27-1973https://gratefuldeadoftheday.com/07-28-1973 Our Dead of the Day comes from upstate New York back in 1973. The next night, the Dead played before a massive crowd at Watkins Glen raceway. But the recording we have here is an extended soundcheck for that show. Just listening to the cheers from the crowd – Heads who were camping out for the next night – makes clear, though, that this is far more than just a simple soundcheck. And while the tunes here lack a little of the flow of a full concert, they are as hot as just about anything the Dead played live. A Promised Land rips out of the gate to begin the night with everyone firing from the very beginning. From there, a Sugaree comes on the scene, initially sounding like two people in a closet are noodling on the theme, but quickly morphing into a full-on, resplendent version, held fast by Phil’s ringing bass and Billy’s sweet and simple drums. Following the Sugaree, they come back with a fun Mexicali before heading into one of the highlights of the soundcheck, an immense Bird Song. There is a clear New Speedway Boogie emerging before Jerry takes over and sends it into Bird Song, which was definitely for the best. While Bird Song is always good, listening to this incredibly jammed out – they reach some distant territory in the midst of the massive middle jam – you cannot help but wonder why they did not play such epic versions on a more regular basis. Regardless, this rendition is not to be missed. On the heels of the Bird Song, the boys fire up a stellar Big River, rolling right on down the river into another awesome tune in Tennessee Jed. After that, I am not quite sure what the boys get into, but it is a fun minute of music heading into a break, whereupon Jerry reminds everyone, lest they forget, that "this is only a test.” Coming out of the break, Phil makes sure everyone knows that this is still a test before rolling out a splendid, crisp Mississippi Half Step. Me And My Uncle then shoots out before a luscious and monumental jam appears. There are some hints of Fire On The Mountin in the jam, and some folks see this jam as not only the hightlight of the night, but an early precursor to the breakout of Fire four years later at Winterland. To our ears any resonances with Fire are simply serendipitous. Still, the jam is scintillating and focused, every moment worth savoring until it settles into Wharf Rat, which is itself out of this world. Finally, the boys put the cap on the soundcheck with a short, rocking Around And Around. The next night was a summer music festival, The Summer Jam at Watkins Glen, featuring The Band, The Allman Brothers, and The Grateful Dead. Some 600,000 people came out for that show, making it the largest audience ever at a "pop festival” according to the Guinness Book of World Records. All three bands performed an extended soundcheck the night before with the Dead coming out last.

Vibes, Grooves, Free AI,. where have all these crazy people gone................ I don't believe any of them were given access to this new site. I believe Grooves would come by from time to time. Vibe and DAG don't really post anymore, Vibe maybe once or twice a year. He can't from work. Free AI is a hit and run kind of thing. Not the same without them.

June 16, 20214 yr Author Dead of the Day: June 16, 1974 State Fairgrounds Des Moines, Iowa ★★★★★ There are a few shows on this date, but nothing comes close to the 1974 three-set night that is our Dead of the Day. The playing on the Bertha and Mexicali that open the show sure sound hot, but the vocals are buried in the mix, making the tunes almost unlistenable. Nearly everything gets straightened out in time for an outstanding Row Jimmy with Jerry’s beautiful guitar licks setting off the awesome playing and vocals. A song later Scarlet Begonias comes out to play, and the music is so scintillating, but you almost know that Donna is going to put a damper on things. And, true to form, she does sing off key and provide a little caterwauling, but, on the whole, it is still a very solid version. Black Throated Wind arrives on the scene afterwards, and, despite a bit more sound issues, Bobby’s heartfelt vocals deliver. The Sugaree that comes next packs some unreal music into its short six minutes, followed up by an estimable El Paso and a lovely It Must Have Been the Roses that is one for the ages. The set really does not let up as the Dead role from there into a hot Jack Straw with Keith doing some funky things on keys and Jerry bringing his usual brilliant guitar. But the highlight of the set might very well be the China Cat Sunflower, which, as someone on Archive called it, is downright "raunchy” as all the boys comes together in seamless, mind-meld perfection for a romping, punchy, beatific piece of magic that transitions into Rider like nothing you have heard before. I Know You Rider holds onto the energy and verve, continuing the jamming for quite some time before rolling through a fantastic little Me and Julio sort of theme that arrives at the first verse. Unsurprisingly by this point, the Around and Around that finishes off the set is delightful in its own right with Billy, Jerry, and, especially, Keith trading insane licks while Bobby serves as the maestro with his vocals. The whole night could have ended at this point, and the show would have been out of sight, but, of course, there was not just one, but two more sets to come. The second set is a little bit shorter, but with the unreal Eyes of the World>Big River and Playin’ In The Band, it gives the earlier set a run for its money. The Eyes is tight, clean, and tasty with some really jazzy runs before it turns a corner in the latter half. At that point, the boys hit on an elemental, crashing and cascading jam that leads them into the Mississippi of Big River. After the fireworks of the previous two tunes, Playin’ starts out in standard form, though craziness quickly ensues with some funky sounds – is that a kazoo or just Keith’s organ? – and searching exploration. Eventually, deep space is reached, or at least a thicket of impenetrable wilderness with four-legged beasts haunting the landscape and screeching raptors buzzing overhead. All told, the second set is the quintessential counterpoint to the first with the latter’s tasty and, at times, face-melting jams counterpoising the beautifully played loveliness of the earlier set. The third set is a mix of the two earlier ones. On songs like Tennessee Jed, which opens the final period, and Me and My Uncle, the Dead continue offering up hot versions of ballads with some fine, short jams mixed in. But then we get to the otherworldly end to Truckin’ and the Nobody’s Fault But Mine and Mind Left Body jams out of it, you realize that you are in truly uncharted territory. These are some of the spaciest, though still directed and balanced, jams that you are going to find in the Dead oeuvre. At times, it feels like you are following along with Kurtz going up the river, watching a demigod – the band itself – lording over its domain. But there is nothing evil about the shadowy power of the Dead, though the Wharf Rat that follows might make some think otherwise, as it creates a hero – ridden into town on such great music – out of a rather unsavory character. The set finishes off with a stellar Going Down the Road Feeling Bad. And, finally, Casey Jones serves as the encore to this amazing concert.
