May 7May 7 Pakistan has the option of an asymmetric response. Muslims comprise 14% (or 211 million) of India's population, and a good chunk of them are disaffected. At the same time, Pakistani ISI (their intelligence service) is quite competent at stirring up sheet. Put the two together, and it could get ugly.

Given how quickly it happened after takeoff, plus the pilot declaring an emergency, it sounds like an accident, but you never know. What we know so farpublished at 06:0806:08It's been just over an hour since we first reported an Air India plane crashed near the airport in Ahmedabad. Here's what we know so far:There were 242 people on board, including two pilots and 10 cabin crewOf the passengers, there were 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, one Canadian national and seven Portuguese nationalsThe plane - a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner - gave a mayday call to air traffic control after taking off, but then gave no responseSignal was lost seconds after take-off when the plane had reached 625 feet, according to Flight RadarThe plane came down in a residential area near the airport"Everyone is running right now trying to save as many lives as possible," the BBC's Roxy Gagdekar reports from the scene
June 12Jun 12 Just saw a video of the crash. The aircraft is at 300 to 400 feet with the flaps fully up. Raising and lowering the flaps is normally done in stages over several thousand feet.

June 12Jun 12 Horrible. Possibly just as many people died on the ground. Another sad reminder to enjoy life and loved ones while they are here.

Not sure why the pilot would declare an emergency though, if he did. The initial reports could be wrong about that.
