I just got off the golf course, but I saw one guy walked away. Was he the only survivor?

Yes, a Brit sitting in seat 11A.

quickly changing my upcoming flight seat to 11A

That would be my initial reaction. 400 feet AGL (or so) on takeff with a visible sink rate and 0 flaps kind of leans toward that conclusion. Not sure why the pilot would declare an emergency though, if he did. The initial reports could be wrong about that.

I heard also that the local temp was well over a hundred and they started the roll from an intersection and not the end of the runway.

Picked the worst possible time to have a brain fart.

The airlines have probably started charging extra for that seat already.

I wonder if they forgot to recalculate their TOLD? TOLD = TakeOff and Landing Data for those not familiar with the concept. It takes into account runway condition, temperature, pressure altitude, winds, aircraft weight, thrust setting, flap setting, and runway length. If they calculated TOLD for the full runway length, then accepted a shorter intersection takeoff without recalculating TOLD they could end up in a thrust and lift deficient situation leading to a stall. I still wonder if the pilot declared an emergency as reported earlier. In a situation like that (stall at low altitude) they're usually way too busy to bother talking on the radio.

Pretty good video speculating on what may have happened. TLDW... The Pilot Monitoring raised the flaps by mistake rather than the landing gear. The Pilot Flying interpreted the sudden sink rate as a loss of thrust, rather than a loss of lift, and made a radio call declaring an emergency.

Actually looks like they used the full length of the runway after all.

IIRC the 787 checklists are on the mfd and tied in to the systems so if you check for something that isn’t set it won’t let you check it off.

I just don’t get how you can mistakenly raise the flaps thinking you retracted the gear. Completely different spots, orientations, and lever shape.

Towards the end of the one security cam video it almost looks like there’s dirt getting kicked up as if they went past the opposite threshold.

I’m think it’s either they Fd up the TOLD data like you said or someone somewhere Fd up the flaps.

It's India....
