Those citing his low snap percentage and one dimensional nature are not wrong. And if the Eagles want him but aren't sure about a long-term deal (or they can't agree on numbers) $13M is a lot of money to pay when it can't be prorated over multiple years (the cap hit for 5th year options can't be spread out)But it's also true that his value to this defense is way greater than those statistics would suggest. He eats up blockers and space and is terrific against the run. What he does that frees up the second level guys to eat and helps take away a big part of the opponents offense. Its also true that he's not needed as much when the team is playing from ahead. All that makes his overall value very difficult to quantify, not just for the Eagles, but for other teams as well. For some teams, he wouldn't be worth very much, but for other teams, he could be just the "missing piece" they need to put them over the top depending on scheme and other personnel.Really good to see you posting! If my 77 year-old memory is correct, you were a career Navy man. Is that still the case?BTW, I agree 100% in your assessment of Davis.
April 30Apr 30 I was kinda feeling the same way, but they signed him.https://www.nbcsportsphiladelphia.com/nfl/philadelphia-eagles/eagles-pick-up-5th-year-option-for-dt-jordan-davis/663712/

April 30Apr 30 Based on the current situation, I think it was the best move to do the 5th year option on Davis. So far, he hasn't quite lived up to the expectations of his draft status, but he hasn't been a flat-out bust either. My main concern with Davis has always been if he's one of those "gentle giants" and/or if his head/heart are truly in the game of football. He has all the God given talent and physical prowess you could hope for when it comes to a DT-type player. But the only way players realize their natural talent is if they're 100% motivated to do so. Is Davis?I just hope he doesn't try to pull an Albert Haynesworth....be motivated to dominate for this year, then get paid, then go back to eating twinkies and playing video games.

May 1May 1 J D has two years to develop some pass rushing moves. Otherwise he is and will always be limited.
May 1May 1 The team made the correct decision with Jordan. He's a beast stopping the run, stepped up in the playoffs, and this keeps the Philly dawg pound in tact, the importance of which should not be underestimated.
May 16May 16 Big year for Davis. He’s going to need to earn that extension and as of right now he’s lower on the list compared to some of the other guys. If he loses out on playing to some of the other guys then I have a hard time seeing him coming back. Really can’t give big money to a part time player who is being outperformed by lesser or younger players. I want to see Jordan Davis take that next step though.
May 17May 17 It's an interesting situation. We obviously will make Carter one of, if not the, highest paid DT in the NFL once he is eligible for an extension. That will leave less money for us to allocate on others at the position. If Davis "breaks out," he will see more demand (in free agency) than Williams who is now making $26M/year after amassing 11.5 sacks through 4 regular seasons and 3 more sacks in 9 playoff games. But if he remains quietly solid, he could possibly be re-signed to a modest extension, perhaps with incentive clauses. There appears to be an increasing interest in run-stoppers --- at least that's the perception I'm getting based on drafting trends, but it remains to be seen if they will ever command anything close to as much money as the flashy pass-rushers.On top of that, we still have that Georgia Bulldog dynamic that could affect decisions some of our pending FAs make. Having Davis has been good for Carter. Davis is also the leader of the position group. So there are things to consider regarding chemistry, culture and roles.I'm definitely not suggesting Davis is irreplaceable. Nobody is, really. But I've always felt that had Buddy Ryan not been fired that there's no way Reggie White would have left. I personally believe there was a bond of loyalty there that would have played in our favor. Then after that, Both Simmons and Joyner followed Ryan to Arizona. I'm curious to see how this Bulldog Dynamic plays out. It would be cool if we could keep them all together for years and have a top defense the whole time --- even if some are less flashy that others.
May 31May 31 Author Been off this board for a while. As others have said , if the Eagles took a DT in the first 2 rounds, I don’t think this would have happened.I still feel people are being too lenient on a guy that Fangio was only trusting for 25% of snaps at the key point of the season. That being said, I do see it as a positive that they extended him as Fangio would have had his input and he looked good at times last year. I’m hoping he earns and gets 40-50% playing time.

If the opportunity to make life altering money doesn't motivate somebody, what does? Unless he's not mature enough to understand the opportunity/risk he's being presented with.

He said going into last year he "understood" about staying in shape but didn't practice it consistently. Now he supposedly understands it and is practicing it consistently. But why the hell did it take him until mid way through his 3rd year to do this? Probably no coincidence that he finally "gets it" at the last minute before he's eligible for a contract extension. Assuming he stays in shape and plays well this year, the big question will be if he will maintain it after he gets paid? He definitely seems like a guy who just doesn't have that fire. I hope I'm wrong.
