Let The OTAs Begin

Posted:May 27th, 2025 |Author:Tommy Lawlor

Who is ready for some activities? Forget games. Heck, forget practice. We’re talking about activities. This might not sound compelling. This might not be compelling. But it is the start of what could be a very interesting season.

There was probably more contact at recent high school proms, but this isn’t a time for hitting and being physical. The OTAs are a time to get loose and to learn. These are basically passing camps. The veterans will be shaking off rust, while the young players will be trying to show their potential. Nobody is going to win a job. Players can impress the coaches and get the summer off to a good start.

Young receivers will have the best chance to shine. Jahan Dotson is in his first offseason with the Eagles. It would help if he could take a step forward this year. Ainias Smith was hampered by injuries last year. He has a chance to be a backup receiver and also a return specialist this season. He needs to build the coaches confidence in him. Johnny Wilson flashed at times last season, but was too inconsistent to be counted on. He could be an interesting role player if he can play better this year.

The Eagles have a bunch of TEs. All of them outside of Dallas Goedert will be trying to build chemistry with Jalen Hurts and the other QBs.

Speaking of QBs, all four of the Eagles signal-callers have something to show. Hurts was inconsistent early last season. He’s got a new offensive coordinator. It would be good to see him get off to a strong start. Tanner McKee is the top backup. That should get him fired up, but can make some guys nervous. Dorian Thompson-Robinson and rookie Kyle McCord will be battling for the #3 spot. DTR has more experience and athleticism. McCord is the more skilled passer.

The young DBs will get a chance to show what they can do. Kelee Ringo will probably get the key reps at LCB. Sydney Brown and rookie Andrew Mukuba will be battling for a starting safety spot. Rookie Mac McWilliams will try to show what he can do, primarily in the slot.

There will be competition at several spots. No one is going to win a job in May. The players can help themselves if they get off to a good start. Beyond that, we might get answers to some questions. Who will get the first reps at RG? Where will Avery Williams be lining up? Is Bryce Huff still alive?

Another rookie signed.

Campbell will get done. Mukuba is one to watch. Only a couple of second round picks have signed. They were given guaranteed contracts. We’ll see how this situation plays out.

Here is an unexpected update on Nakobe Dean.

Anything he can do to get back sooner is good by me. The Eagles defense would love to have Zack Baun and Dean as the starting LBs for most of the season. They were an outstanding duo last year.
