I'm a super novice, and last year I planted basil, oregano, cilantro, a ghost pepper plant, and something else all in one bed 🤣 It wasn't the smartest decision. Surprisingly, the basil thrived despite all the other herbs so close to it. I think I got 2 ghost peppers total the entire summer and I used one as a prank in my BIL's burger one night. This year, I've got the basil by itself in that one large bed (it's probably at least 7-8 gallons) and the jalapeno plants each in a 6 gallon with some miracle gro pot soil. I didn't buy seedlings or anything. I just bought the baby plants from our local hardware store. Any tips or suggestions on how to make the jalapenos grow besides showing them pornhub videos?
April 24, 20214 yr well draining soil, a container that allows excess water to drain away, and plenty of sun. too much water can be a detriment. one plant should yield plenty of peppers. we also like the poblanos and cubanelles.

So my giant porcelain pots with no drainage are an awful choice?

April 24, 20214 yr you could transfer them into another container, dump the rest of the soil into a bucket and drill a couple holes in the bottom of your pots (from underneath) with a tile drill bit. be sure to place some landscape fabric in the bottom of the pot before replacing everything so the dirt doesn’t keep washing through.
June 10, 20214 yr My current mower is 18 years old, I bought it used for $450 close to 10 years ago, and it is need of some TLC to the tune of $2-300 and an afternoon of my time (replacing a blade spindle, blades, tearing engine apart to fix oil leak, etc). So, I'm thinking about getting a new mower instead of dumping money into this one... I have about 1/2 an acre. When I bought this mower I downsized from a 36" riding mower to a 33" wide cut walk behind and reduced my mowing time due to not having to back up and turn around so much. Since then I've added a few more obstacles to my yard (raised garden beds, swing set, etc). I'd like to get back into a riding mower so I can move my utility trailer around but would need a small zero turn to maneuver around the obstacles. My side yards have a decent slope as I have a walk out basement, so I'm concerned about a zero turn. Does anyone have any experience with them on slopes? Everything I've heard is they're not good...

My property has some fairly steep slopes that I need to mow - I feel more stable on them on a zero turn than I ever did on a lawn tractor. I go up and down and side to side - you may occasionally slide a bit but if you go slow you'll be fine

Most of my hills would generally be mowed straight up and down, except one corner that kind of bowls a bit, and they aren't steep enough for me to be concerned about tipping backwards. The backyard has a gentle slope to it as well but from what you've said it doesn't sound like that would be a big concern either.

Yeah the only thing you'd wanna be careful of is stopping in the middle of a hill facing up and then starting again with too much throttle - danger of flipping back over
June 10, 20223 yr it’s a little early but things are starting to pick up in my humble garden with the zucchini, squash, cucumbers and tomatoes. the peppers and okra shouldn’t be too far behind.
June 21, 20223 yr Author I have a large patch of my back yard that is all weeds because it's near a huge pine tree. I think the soil is very acidic, because no grass grows there, and it gets covered in pine needles in the fall. It also gets full sun all day. So I'm considering a huge raised garden and growing stuff. My uncle suggested strawberries, since he mulches his strawberries with pine needles from other places on his yard. Is a raised garden as simple as putting cardboard down over the weeds to kill them off, putting a few inches of topsoil on top of the cardboard, and then taking some 2x4s or something and filling out to these edges? Is there anything else I would need to do? I don't have huge chunks of time, due to my work schedule, so I am trying to do it as easily as possible.
June 21, 20223 yr i wouldn’t go smaller than 2x6 framing at the bare minimum. keep it watered and weeded. you may need a small barrier in case of raccoons or deer.

I think I might need some netting to keep the squirrels out. How many inches of soil should I put on top?
