Posted August 24Aug 24 This was the infamous draft where Howie made "incorrect" picks in Jalen Reagor and Jalen Hurts with their first two picks. Howie got really roasted for it. The "correct" picks would have been Justin Jefferson (JJ) and Denzel Mims (DM). Had JJ and DM were drafted, they likely stick with Wentz and Pederson longer than they did and may have been Reid/McNabb 2.0 from 2005-2012. They may have been a team hovering around making the Playoffs instead of being Super Bowl contenders and winners. Making the "incorrect" picks was the best thing for the Eagles. It got Wentz and Pederson out the door, made Howie change how he drafts players. Since Pederson got fired, Eagles have been a top drafting team. Wentz got traded and got great players out of the trade. I doubt Wentz + JJ + DM would have been better than Hurts + AJ Brown + DeVonta Smith. Without drafting Hurts, I don't think they grant Wentz's trade request. Even if the picks were JJ and Jalen Hurts, JJ may have made Wentz look just good enough to go with him as starter over Hurts. The "correct" picks may have doomed the Eagles for years.Something tells me the Jalen Hurts pick may have something to do with missing out on Russell Wilson, not drafting him in the 2nd round and hoping he's there in the 3rd round. Howie may have not wanted a repeat of 2012. Now, Howie looks like a genius for drafting Hurts.
August 24Aug 24 2020 Draft may have been the turning point in Eagles history. The aftermath caused Howie to emphasize production over traits.
August 24Aug 24 Outside of the Blog, these boards have been kind of dead. Thanks for making another topic. Its always interesting to see the butterfly effects of draft picks both good and bad.Brandon Graham over Earl Thomas is a classic case of the turtle beating the rabbit in the race.Earl was a blue chip safety but he was also psychotic by age 29.Graham was a key contributor and leader on 3 SB teams from age 29 on.One of my favorites is Eric Fisher, Dion Jordan, and Luke Joeckel going 1, 2, 3 in 2013.My team is on the clock and here comes Lane Johnson!

If the Dolphins don’t trade up, then the Eagles take Dion Jordan, right?

Now, Howie looks like a genius for drafting Hurts.I have always believe the real reason Howie took Hurts in Round 2 was because of COVID, there was at the time a real possibility the 2020 College Football season would be cancelled or at least delayed to the Spring of 2021 (FCS's season was in fact delayed to the spring), meaning there was the possibility at that point by the time the 2021 draft rolled around a team might have been willing to risk a high first for Hurts solely because he would have been in the NFL for a year while many college players if the 2020 season was cancelled would not have played a down since late 2019-early 2020 in many cases. Maybe the Jags even offer the first overall pick for Hurts because of no football in 2020 if that had happened. Obviously, the season in college football was played and that quarterback class turned out to be a complete dud (for now) but it could have been Howie at the time was gambling on the 2020 season in college football being cancelled due to COVID.

But, I do always wonder how Wentz' career would have gone if not for his unfortunate injury and then proceeding to watch his backup win the Super Bowl...followed by a statue being built of Foles and Pederson. And even after that, the following season when he injured his back (think it was his back) and watched Foles come within an Alshon Jeffrey drop of making it back to the NFCCG.That whole experience seemed to significantly impact Wentz' psyche. Prior to that knee injury, he was taking the league by storm and was playing like a man on fire.
August 25Aug 25 The 2022 draft is a lot more interesting to rehash to me. The Eagles have already rostered 5 players drafted in the 1st round that year -- their own Jordan Davis (13th), plus Kenyon Green (15th), Jahan Dotson (16th), Kenny Pickett (20th) and Lewis Cine (32nd). And besides their own 2nd rounder (Cam Jurgens - 51st), they also now have Metchie (44th). It's no wonder there are rumors about trading for Javon Walker, who went 1st that year.

Before the blog there was topics on everything now it basically all gets lumped into the blog.

I just miss the times on the boards where it was like a race to be the first one to start a new topic with news. And the mods would have to end up merging like 3 topics together posted within minutes.

August 29Aug 29 There is no rationalization in the world that would have me preferring to take Jalen Reagor over Justin JeffersonOn 8/23/2025 at 10:41 PM, gameshowfan91 said:he "correct" picks would have been Justin Jefferson (JJ) and Denzel Mims (DM).
