October 6Oct 6 Author Yes this is the Hunt sucks thread because he does. He's terrible. That's what this site is, to discuss the team. I don't drink the koolaid I try to assess based on what is really happening. We have done such a great job drafting in the first 2 rounds. As well as any team in the league recently. But in rounds 3-7 we have supplied very few players that are producing. I count 2 productive players, out of 19 picks in rounds 3-7 the past 3 drafts. Yes brkmsn I think Hunt gives us very little stopping the run or rushing the QB. He plays a lot of snaps and makes almost no tackles and rarely hits the QB and he is on the field because of his 3rd round draft status and we all know Howie demands that early picks play. And what other options does Vic have? Hunt can't stop the run or get to the QB but yes he can run some and cover ok. Who else can Vic put in there? Our D line talent after the 3 Georgia guys are all border line NFL players. We talk all the time about prioritizing the tranches. Free agency hit us hard and we lost BG to retirement and Howie foolishly traded Booker. Our D line is so much weaker. Yesterday it got pushed around. You can count on DL help early next draft.
October 8Oct 8 And let's not forget this play: Not only is this "intentional" grounding (call botched), but the NFL should credit defenders with the sack, IMO. According to PFF, out of 169 edge rushers, Hunt ranks 51st in pass rush snaps played, and ranks 35th in total pressures and 35th in hurries. According to NGS, Hunt had 21 pass rushes Sunday and produced 3 pressures with an average time to pressure of 2.5 seconds. According to me, Hunt is not currently on pace to make his first Pro Bowl, but he is not "terrible" by any stretch of the imagination. He's a very young and raw player that is already a solid NFL starter. It's reasonable to expect continued growth, development and improvement moving forward.
October 15Oct 15 He hasn't played well, especially with the departed Huff, playing well for SF. I felt this was a reach project pick. He could have been had in the 4th or 5th rd. Hunt is still the developmental stage where he needs another more impactful End/Edge to maximize his talents. Smith being injured really is hurting the D.
October 15Oct 15 I don’t think Hunt is terrible. He is still developing and really should be part of a rotation like last season and not expected to be a full time starter. It was unfortunate that Sweat’s year to become a free agent coincided with Hunt’s 2nd season … it would have been huge to allow him another year to grow in the defense. Howie did him a bit of disservice by not bringing in a more polished vet than Uche and Ojulari. He overcorrected here with the strategy shift to rely on young players rather than run it back with aging vets … there has to be a happy middle somewhere.

As you say he shouldn’t be a full time starter and that was the mistake made during the offseason. He was drafted as a developmental player who had tools to work with. He then outperformed expectations last year and the organisation wrongly assumed he could take another huge leap.

Last year he was part of a great Dline that offered him more space and focused less attention on him. You don't draft developmental players in the 3rd round. You draft starters there. He was a safety at Cornell in the Ivy League recently so he absolutely qualifies as a developmenatal player. Those types are day 3 selections not in round 3 where good starters are found by teams that know how to draft
October 16Oct 16 Author In Hunt's senior years in college this is who they played and the scores...UTMartin 66-7, AR Baptist 66-0, WKU 52-22, Prarie View 30-0, Nichols 38-7, SE LA 34-19, E Texas A&M 17-13, McNeese State 35-24, and a loss to Lamar 21-19. The Disabled Priests and Blind Nuns weren't available. The following year after he was drafted they played SMU and lost 59-7. Quite an unusual decison to take a developemental player who player safety previously. Ambitious to try and eveluate his ability vs this low low level of compitition and draft him in the 3rd round rather on day 3 where players like this belong. It's a lottery ticket in the 3rd.

I'm pretty sure Fangio knows whether or not Hunt is doing what he is being asked to do. It's not like he's missing tackles or regularly getting penalized. His skill set allows Vic to drop him in coverage from time to time and he's above average in effectiveness in that area. The defense as a whole has not generated many sacks to date. If you look at the stats like you do and see that Jalen Carter has played more snaps than Jalyx Hunt and has produced less per snap played, I guess you can only conclude that Carter also is playing like he doesn't belong in the NFL. Jalen Carter has not been good this year and part of the problem
October 17Oct 17 Author Because we have no pass rush at edge Carter is being double teamed on every play

October 26Oct 26 Author What do you know. Hunt had the first good game of his career today vs the Giants. Granted vs a bad offense on the road with a rookie QB without his best WR and RB and behind all day so they had to pass and the DL could tee off...but besides that for the first time he wanted to be at the point of attack. He's averaged 45 snaps a game and only 1 solo tackle every 9 quarters of play. Uche is averaging almost 6 TIMES the solo tackles prorated for snaps played even though he weighs 25 pounds less than Hunt. Normally Hunt avoids contact. He runs to the tackled player and poses to get in the frame...but today for the first time he sought out the ball carrier and first contact. Let's see if he can do it again vs a decent team without today's perfect set up

November 11Nov 11 Author It appears that the coaching staff finally got thru to him that he has to take a straight line to the ball carrier and initiate contact. He did it this game and after last week I mentioned he did it then and maybe in week 8. Prior to that for a year and a half he has been a really weak link. You guys love stats...first 7 games this year he had 1 solo tackle every 102 snaps. He was averging 45 snaps a game so he made a solo tackle every 9 quarters and that tackle was usually a ball carrier runing right at him. Uche is a journeyman who is 25 pounds lighter and thru 7 games had 5 1/2 TIMES prorated for snaps played the solo tackles. You can't play edge in the NFL and run away from contact like he has for the last 1 1/2 years. I watch the games then the replay and have watched Hunt run parallel to the play for a year and a half. Two games ago he changed. The coaches finally got to him I guess and he went right to the ball carrier for once. He made some good plays thru the line and also had Love run right into his arms way out on the left flat when he was engulphed by the OT like he normally is when he goes wide. And he had the nice tackle for a loss when the O line did a stunt left and froze and watched him run towards and across them without moving. In the past Hunt would not have gone for that opening. He would have engaged the Olineman in a losing bull rush or hand fight and the ball carrier would have run 10 yards thru that opening. But now he is taking a straight line to the ball carrier. He can certainly be productive doing that especially with Carter forcing ball carriers away from him. Not sure why it took to game 8 in his second year to realize he is out there to make a tackle and not just watch others do it. So if he's going to change and play like a pro starting 3 games ago, I'll have to change my opinion of him if the light has gone on and he is now going to attack the ball carrier. It's about time.

It's about time.Once again, I would challenge you to provide video clips supporting your take. Since I like stats so much, I checked and there are about 600 career snaps he has played before, "the coaching got through to him." So you should have a ton of video evidence readily available to show how "bad" he was.One thing about playing edge in football is that it's very simple for a team to run to the other side. They also can choose to run up the middle. So how do you tell if a player is doing his job or not play after play? You look at the video, not the stat sheet. A DE or OLB may be asked to simply set the edge, keeping the runner contained inside where there are more defenders to make the play. There are no stats for setting the edge. I can tell you as of today, Hunt has played 151 run defense snaps. Can you tell me how many of those were runs to his side? Can you tell us how many of those runs to his side he failed to set the edge?Out of 114 qualifying edge defenders, Hunt currently ranks 18th in solo tackles. Mind you in the NFL, there are 64 starters at edge positions.Another thing about solo tackle stats is they don't track where they happen (behind the LOS or after getting dragged 5 yards past the 1st down marker). So the best way to express criticism of a player is with video examples. In the end, this was just a stupid thread based on an an absurd claim that contained no substance to validate said claim.
